I cannot get the Realtek Card installed in w98-se.
Error message: NDIS.vxd and ntkern.vxd could not load the driver (code 2). Install a newer driver?
I run an IBM-aptiva Pentium MMX 200Mhz with w98-se. The model is 2137e22I and BIOS is version jw3nl2e dated 08/31/97

I installed a Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC card with packed drivers for connection to wXP-pro PC with twisted UTP cable.

    What I did.
    - I ran a dutch (NL) W98-SE, put the card in, but did not have W98 installation CD at hand for plug-n-play installation. Various files and drivers were missing.
    - I installed full EN W98-SE over the previous NL W98-SE. The card seemed to be recognized. I recognized several files being installed that were previously missing.
    - I updated the driver with drivers supplied by Realtek (sweex)
    - I got error message as described above
    - The NDIS.VXD was/is not loaded in VMM32.vxd so I manually copied into c:\Windows\system\vmm32 as described in the article of Mr Roy Lerner. The NTKERN.VXD is loaded in vmm32.vxd as shown in regedit.
    - After this I had a moment were the device gave the error code 1F6 (whatever that may be)
    - I updated driver; device was suddenly missing in system overview. Creating network adapter device again ended in error-code: cannot automatically install plug-n-play device; restart computer?
    - I created device again using 'existing NDIS2 adapter'. That I updated with realtek driver and the system recognized this to be the Realtec bus card. But still with error message as mentioned in the 'issue'.

Could you please help me out? I'm lost.
(PS: no need to say that I cannot run network access from w98-se [wizard sais there's no connection and stops] and I did not try from XP)

    Kind regards,

Now that you have a windows CD:
    1. Go to device manager and remove the network adapter for the nic.
    2. reboot computer and let plug & play detect and install the nic drivers.
    3. have windows cdrom handy to use when prompted.

I used that same card to connect my 98 to my XP. It didn't detect the card, but my network somehow stays up. However, this was after, getting some error, pulling the card out, turning it on, shut down, re-insertion, then boot up and voila it worked. Maybe you could reinstall the card?

Google a 1f6 error, and you'll find that the card is no good.
For the price of another $15 card, you can save the headaches.
I've run across this hundreds of times, and although it seems the card may be good if you install it under Win2k or xp, it simply won't go into 98/98se.
There is no definitive way around this, other than buying another card.
