Just read an article in WINXPNews about really deleting a file and that at best, the only changes are to the FAT pointers.

I thought of this: Lets say you have a 10 meg file that you want to be totally destroyed. Could I not SAVE AS some other 10 meg file to the same name as the file I want destroyed and if necessary do this more than once

When you delete a file in Windows, it simply changes the pointer in the FAT. If you install something else, that will usually overwrite the old data, and it's definnitely gone.
If you're paranoid, do a defrag. The rearranging of files on the hard drive overwrites everything.
If you're completely mad, get one of the file shredding apps.

Even though reboot doesn't seem to think highly of any shredder apps, I have used and like the one from www.sysinternals.com - free and effective.

There are lots I've never tried and a few I've tried and will never use again though.
