I don't use Real Player nor do I make music CD's, I have sound disabled and don't watch video on my computer. I use Win 98. Do I need Real Player? Can I uninstall then clear registry items? Thank you.

I suspect you need Real Player like you need a hole in the head. If you have ever been caught with a Black and Decker drill attempting to trepan then keep those files. If not then delete away!

Thank you. The porgram is always asking to go on line to update and it is a pain. So will save the original DL program zip file and delete the others.

If you are an AOL user, and you uninstall RealPlayer, you may find it magically installed again.
When opening AOL [certain versions] after the uninstall, you'll get a message that a componet is damaged, then the install is done in the background.

Well if you are stupid enough to install AOL then you get everything that you deserve!

AOL is not the only thing that will re-install Real player.

In XP Pro I had removed~deleted~cleaned up the registry.

Real Player IS BACK From whence it came I have no damned idea.

All I can say for sure and stand firm on is the fact that I DID NOT install AOL.

I do know that some Internet sites require Real Player.

Just to add something to my previous reply.

There is a STRONG POSSIBILITY that Ol' BillyBob here was half asleep or just not paying attention said YES when it should have been NO.

I only used AOL once, that was to get online to get another service. I am satisfied with my $10 a month, unlimited access, 300 mb webspace, AV scanned multiple email accounts dial up service. One thing I really like about this service is that a few months ago one of their servers went down, and they sent an email the following day explaining why there was poor service on that day. I wasn't affected as it was not in my area, thought it was nice, though.
I only brought up the AOL thing as I have a friend who is on it, and she wanted RP gone. So I completely removed everything to do with it. She went into her AOL, and the RP was immediately reinstalled from within itself, something to do with 'you got mail'.
I cannot convince her to leave it.

I do understand why you brought it up as it is a fact the AOL does do that.

We have AIM ( AOL Instant Messenger ) on our machines. But it does not require Real Player.

I have again removed RP and will just have to watch more carefully as to where it may have come from.
