First I want to tell you I LOVE your web page. It has saved me several times! I am currently using Netscape 7.0 but need to update due to new virus program.
I downloaded the full version offline file (NSsetup-full.exe), quite a chore with only dialup! I have read Custom install 7.2 and feel I am ready to take on the challenge. :)
But a few more questions. First, I still have Netscape 4.7 installed. Should I remove it and the profiles first?
Second, you said during install do not install java, flash, etc at that time but do it separate. Do I install flash from NSsetup.exe or from the flash web page?
Third: Will my profiles from Netscape 7.0 (Windows/application data/mozilla/profiles/*.slt) automatically transfer to 7.2?
I also know I need to update Java since I have JRE 1.4.4_04 version.
BTW: I am using Windows 98 SE
Thanks for any advice before biting the bullet. :D

Welcome to the Forum, Aunt Polly!

    Aunt Polly,

It's always good to hear that my pages are actually helping users! Thank you for the feedback.
Not unless you don't intend to use it anymore. Having 4.7 installed won't interfere with installing and using Netscape 7.2.

Install Flash from the Macromedia Site.
Install Java 5.0 JRE from the Sun Java Site
By a "Clean" install, may I assume that you intend to uninstall 7.0 using Add/Remove before installing Netscape 7.2? If that is the case, then yes, your existing Profile data will be used by Netscape 7.2.

Sounds as if you have all your ducks in a row, and good planning usually ends with a smooth unstall/install.

Please post back with any further questions.

    Ramona

    Plan to keep Netscape 7.0

Thank you Ramono for your good advice.

"Not unless you don't intend to use it anymore. Having 4.7 installed won't interfere with installing and using Netscape 7.2. "

I do not use Netscape 4.7 anymore as it doesn't work for most sites anyway, so will remove with Add/Remove.

"By a "Clean" install, may I assume that you intend to uninstall 7.0 using Add/Remove before installing Netscape 7.2? If that is the case, then yes, your existing Profile data will be used by Netscape 7.2."

I did not plan to delete Netscape 7.0. So will my profile transfer okay if I install Netscape 7.2 in C://Netscape 7.2?
    Thanks again.

    Java

P.S. Do I install the new Java version before or after installing Netscape 7.2 or does it matter? And do I remove my current Java before installing the newest version?

    Aunt Polly,

If you plan to keep Netscape 7.0, that's fine, and it will not interfere with Netscape 7.2. However, you can't share a Profile with the two Profiles. The Release Notes are adamant on that point. You must create a new Profile for Netscape 7.2, and I would recommend doing so before you install 7.2. Use the Netscape 7.0 Profile Manager to do so. Once you have installed 7.2, and try to open 7.2, the Profile Manager will open, and you can select the newly created Profile name. The Profile Manager is located here:
    Start | Programs | Netscape 7.0 | Profile Manager

Also, you are correct in that when you install Netscape 7.2, you don't install it in the Default location. Install it anywhere on the HDD, i.e., C:\Netscape 7.2. See this page for the complete install process:
Custom Install of Netscape 7.2. Step 1. displays the field in which to change the default location of the Program.

When you install Java won't matter.

Let us know if you have further questions.

    Ramona

    New profile

"Once you have installed 7.2, and try to open 7.2, the Profile Manager will open, and you can select the newly created Profile name. "

Will I have to select the new profile EACH time I open Netscape 7.2 if I have 2 profiles?
Is there a way to keep the old profile for Netscape 7.0 and the new profile for Netscape 7.2 separate? Do they use the same directory? ie:Windows/Application/Mozilla/Profiles/name/*.slt

I only want to keep Netscape 7.0 long enough to be sure 7.2 is working okay.
    Thanks again.

Ramona has a nice description on how to open the desired profile .
I have three Netscapes and three Mozilla which keep the profiles in the same directory, and each one is set up to open with the correct profile.
I, also, don't have anything installed in the default location. But, you have to make sure that all your ducks are in a row (or rows).
When you remove 7.0, the profile will remain, and it can be used at a later date.

    Got it!

Thank you both Ramona and Westside!
Last night I did a search for profile and read everything I could about backing up, moving, creating new profiles. Printed out all the wonder info found in Netscape solutions.
I feel I am more than ready to move ahead with instillation of NS 7.2. Although tomorrow since I have to go to work today. ;) :D
My husband plans to install Firefox on his laptop, XP, which would be a clean install since he only has IE on it now. Any words of wisdom before installation?
    Thanks so much.

    Auntpolly,
Firefox is a somewhat different design from Netscape or mozilla. It is more customizable, i.e. "geeky ", but not scary at all. It is a Navigator only, so don't look for mail. But there is Thunderbird, which I use as default Mail Client.
But, just get used to Firefox first. Things have been moved around a bit.
