I am writing a webpage in HTML4 and I have the following code:

" something like this test report. "

My browser (IE8) will not display the PDF file although a "right-click -> Save target as ..." results in a save. Obviously, the PDF file is visible but it does not display.

Anyone have any ideas why?

Rick:

My system developed a similar problem when I had to switch from Acrobat Pro back to Acrobat Reader. I did a download of Reader 9.2from Adobe, but whenever I tried to open a PDF file on a web-site, I got a message saying "the version of reader that is running can't be used to read this document. Acrobat 8 or Reader 9 is required. "

This was confusing, as I had Reader 9.2.

In the end, I removed Reader and then went to a website, full of PDFs, which offered a free download. I downloaded from there and now have a Reader 9 that is recognized by web-sites. The only difference I can see is that there's now a program in my system called "Adobe Reader 9 Installer" which wasn't there before.

In both cases. The URL for the file at the website is
http://adasafehouse.webs.com/doc/Walker.pdf

Perhaps you might check if it downloads for you.

Thanks

Thanks to Pete and Steve.
It's nice to know that it is only happening to me :)
The question I have, however, is, "Why is it happening? "
Does anyone have any ideas what would make IE8 refuse to read PDF files?
Thanks

Open IE > Tools Menu > Manage Addons > rt click Adobe PDF Link Helper and verify if Enabled or Disabled.

I have done that Tony. It was disabled and is now enabled. Unfortunately :( it hasn't made any difference, even after a reboot. IE8 is still obstinate about not displaying PDF files.

On a default install of IE8 and Adobe Reader the plugin will be enabled, thus I suspect the possibility of a separate security program hooking into IE and disabling the adobe plugin. Or some other app that disabled it. Or Custom security settings have been changed for the Internet Zone in Tools > Options > Security.

Interesting problem – lol

Your site works for me with XP and Adobe 9.2.
Also have Adobe PDF Link Helper disabled.
Adobe still opens up at your site.

sooo-
In the Currently loaded add-ons box scroll to – Run without permission – then check that Adobe PDF Reader is enabled.

Mystery – you came up with a good one.
I’m gonna be lookin at it from opposite end.
I disabled Adobe link helper AND the Reader – rebooted – and it STILL opened up at your link.
Don’t like that.

The beastie now works.
I downloaded Adobe Reader 9.2 (What a hassle! Adobe obviously don't want anyone to use their software. I got it from Brothersoft in the end.) and installed it.
Now IE8 uses it to display PDFs both local and from remote sites.

I suspect that something got upset by the latest load of updates Adobe foisted on me. You don't usually suspect that sort of thing.

My thanks to all those who offered their advice. We can all mark this one up to experience.
