I have all of my website image files saved to one cd-rw disc. It contains maybe 100mb of information. When I try to view the contents on the cd-rw, my Gateway XP machine will not read the disc! If I try to read it from either the D drive or the E drive, I get a message that pops up saying to "insert a CD" to continue. I also tried getting to it from DOS and got a "cycle redundancy check" error.

I'd like to be able to get into this cd and the files contained within as I need to restore a file or two to my site.

    Is it anyway possible??

Did you close the burn session or finalize the CD-RW ?

    Try cleaning the disc.

I've had many CD's that did the same thing and was able to read them just fine after a good cleaning.

All it takes is a mixture of water and alcohol and a lint free cloth.

    Hi KinneyV1967.

It would be best to eliminate all of Windows's controls in trying to read that CD.

Get a boot floppy that will turn on the CD and try to read the data in DOS. This way Windows will not be running and the access to the CD won't be jumping around in Windows. If successful you can copy all the data to the hard drive and burn another CD.

    Hope this helps.

    Hi all...

I tried all the methods given but my new Gateway will not read the CD-RW disc. I guess i'll break out the old Micron which I burned the disc with and see if that will work.

As I said, the new Gateway was at one time reading this CD without a problem. Most of the burns were made using my Micron system and a few were done with the Gateway. Maybe the Gateway burner is different and caused some sort of error that made this unreadable now???

Anyway, thanks for the tips! :)

If the CD was created as a read/write on one CDROM it quite often will not be read on another. I do have that problem. I create A CDRW on this machine but I can not read it on another.

I have not had any problems with a CD that was Burned.

Also a problem that I have had with a CDRW CD is that it had to be EJECTED not just open the drawer and take it out . I MUST USE EJECT and I see the drive light go RED for a bit and then the CD ejects.

If I did not EJECT the CD I could not read it again. Nowhere or nohow. Not even on the drive that created it.

    This is also important.

    Hi KennyV1967

Please excuse my limited experience with CDRW. When I put a new disk in the drive, it must be formatted, which means I must load InCD to format and then burn any info to the CD. I assume(?) there are situations when a CDRW burn/read may not require this process. Does your disk require the same program that formatted / burned the disk also read the disk?

We may be getting confused here.

The InCD Formats and creates a CD ( CD-RW ) that can be used as it says Read and Write. Files can be added or deleted just like a HD or Floppy.

That is the kind that I had problems with in other drives. They would only read in the drive that created them.

The other type needs ( I believe by you mentioning InCD you also have ) Nero. Which a different thing. It will only BURN files onto a different ( CD-R ) CD. They can not be used for anything other then READ once they are made. These are the ones I have not had problem with. They can be read by any other CDROM drive that I have on any machine. Even the Neighbors CDROM..

And both are different types of actuall physical CD. CD-R ( used for BURNING ) And CD-RW used to create a Read Write CD.
