I just reformatted a computer and reinstalled Windows XP Home. I can only log on in safe mode. I tried the online guide at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/312295/en-us and did both the guide and the manual but there is no "Notify" to delete. If I repair it, it lets me log on and then I have to activate but then again we start all over again. I don't want to do a windows repair every time you have to log on. I can't do a LGKC because there is no history. I have no idea what else to do.

I followed all the instructions from here http://www.windowsbbs.com/windows-xp/73910-windows-product-activation-problem.html but nothing is working.

Hi and welcome to the BBS,

Since you have reformatted and do not have any data to lose, I suggest you start over again, but this time remove/delete the Windows partition and make it again before formatting and installing Windows.

Could it require the system manufacturer's Windows installation disk (or recovery partition) to install correctly? Some OEM computers only work correctly with the manufacturer's installation.

I've already formatted 4 times. I don't know what else to do. Is there anyway I can download a hp/compaq restore CD instead of paying $23 and waiting 4 days?

I suggest you download the manual from their website. There will (should) be a section about reinstalling Windows. The hard disk dive, if original, might well have a hidden recovery partition (from memory, the only time you need to purchase the CD from HP is when the HDD has failed and a set of "restore" disks had not been made).

HP have forums, you could search or ask there.

    Try

    1) Initiate to activation tool

    - Create a new dword value under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
    NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

    - dword value named : Activation Required
    - set the dword value as : 1

    (or)

    - goto HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\Current
    Version\WPAEvents\oobe timer
    - change atleast one digit of oobe timer value data

    2) Delete RESET5 keys

    - start > search tool > search for reset5.* > delete all the files

    3) Rename/replace WPA.DBL file

    ren c:\windows\system32\WPA.dbl wpadbl.old
    ren c:\windows\system32\wpa.bak wpabak.old
    expand cd drive:\i386\wpa.db_ c:\windows\system32\wpa.dbl

    - start > run > type inf > locate oobe.inf > right click > install
    - insert the cd when requested

    5) Repair installation
