On Windows-Help.net homepage they have this posted:

    Internet Explorer 6 SP1 Updates
    11/06/03, 15:35 GMT
Microsoft released two new fixes: "Internet Explorer Unexpectedly Quits When You Use It to View a Web Page That Contains VML" and "Internet Explorer May Unexpectedly Close When You Leave the Pointer on the Text in the DHTML Editor ".

This is what was happening to me, and Windows Update has not notified me yet. How long does Microsoft wait before posting it to Windows Update? If i update from the link posted, do i click Save?

perhaps because they are still assessing the scope and nature of the problems?

    thanks again PeteC.

I was hoping Windows Update would have this update on their Update site this a.m., but they still do not have it posted there.

I had problems again this a.m. searching so if this one posted here works just the same, then i may as well as do it rather than wait......as i really am not wanting any more unexpected page error msgs and closures as i lose what i am working on each time.

Then after that is fixed, i have to find an 'easy fix' to the .vxd conflict Norton 2003 has made for me....Ugh! We sure spend lots of time fixing and maintaining these computers.

OK as i dont want to sound ignorant as i usually let Windows Update notify me and then i keep track of all i have downloaded in the history there.

So if i dl these latest fixes now to my desktop, then install them, can i then delete the file left on my desktop? If so, then i am ready to get me fix!

    Yup.

If they are uninstallable they will be listed in Add/Remove programs - and Windows Update will recognise that they are loaded.

    Absolutely :D

crystalwoman --I, also, do not see these patches on Windows Update. But I run Win98 First Edition, and see that the Windows-Help.net article says these patches are for Win98SE. Don't know what you run.
Sometimes MS is just being sloppy by not mentioning Win98FE.

    Yes thanks Welshjim: :)

I had noted which systems were shown for the latest 2 updates and i have Win98se.
I downloaded them both now and hopefully can make it through today w/o any new bugs.

I still have a brain to pick with symantec and its .vxd conflict....

My understanding is that MS is going to a once a month notification schedule, a change from weekly. This seems to make IT managers happier :) So, apparently they have started that.

Hi, let me try to clear some stuff up...

    1. The change from weekly > monthly as explained by charlesvar. This applies to security patches only.

    2. Microsoft does not post all fixes to Windows Update. I'm not sure what criteria they follow here.

    3. If they are added to Windows Update, it could be a few days after they have been released to their download site.

    4. As PeteC noted, I link to the files on the Microsoft Download site.

    5.
No. If they would, they would not post files for download from their Download site. They would be realeased to people only after they call MS (I'm sure you've read MS Knowledge Base Articles that say you have to call for the fix).

    Hi Arie!

    Could You, please, elaborate:

    Which articles?

Does this mean that we don´t get notification of all critical updates through Automatic Update and/or the Windows Update site?

I don't have any handy right now...

Yes, but these are NOT critical... these are just bug fixes.

apologies for my dumbly ambiguous comment near the top of the thread. I'm sure that Microsoft wouldn't release any file for download without proper QA.

    by
I wasn't intending to imply that they were holding the file back for further testing or modification, or that they don't know what they are doing; rather, I was wondering if there might be a "bumper bundle" to come at the Windows update site incorporating these two fixes, and possibly others as yet unannounced.

I've had (am still having) so much trouble as a result of applying the October critical patch that I was looking around to see if others were in the same situation. Although neither of these fixes applied to me (W98FE), the dates made me think they could be to counteract side effects of the October critical patch.

I'm sure Microsoft put great effort into checking the critical updates; but after the updates get released there must be a few nasty surprises - with customised browsers and the like. Which is why I suggested they might still be assessing the situation... only on reading it again it looks more like I was making a rather snide comment.

    sorry, HJ

    Arie,
I´ve come across hotfixes which weren´t applicable to all systems, depending on hardware configuration or installed software but the hotfix was on the download site or among the "Recommended Updates" in Windows Update.

What was new to me was that in some cases you have to give them a call to get it, if the hotfix is needed.

    Thanks,
    Christer

I may be off base here but I get the impression that the fixes you have to call for meet two criteria
    - not needed by all systems and not even all of a particular OS version
    - could possibly mess things up on some systems so not good to put out as available to all
