Have a woman who works for me who bought a computer three years ago at Best Buy and had the GeeqSkwad install her Vista for her.

The bloody thing has never worked properly... she's gotten maybe 20 hours on the thing in the whole time she's had it, most of which was farting about trying to make it work.

I am thinking of wiping the drive and re-installing her Vista on it solely for the purpose of migrating to WIN7 via an upgrade.

While I'm fairly sure is is not necessary, I thought I'd ask here if I should also install service packs, or just overlay the WIN7 on the bare-bones Vista and go from there?

She has no data on the hard drive that is of any import to her so a format and re-install seems the best deal as I'd not want to overlay WIN7 on a faulty OS.

    Thought and suggestions appreciated.

Why not skip installing Vista and just install Win 7.

So she can buy the cheaper upgrade package rather than a new install at $....(grumble).

You know sumptin' I don't about the upgrade - vs - new?

    Spiel, bubke!

I never upgraded. I've always chose to Zero out the drive then install the new OS. But that's my personal choice.

Once Win7 'realizes' you are authorized an 'upgrade' by virtue of having Vista installed, it may offer you the option of blitzing the works and starting over, in which case, I would do, being the Vista install has caused nothing but problems.

This, of course, would be optimum performance! Hence, I do not look for same from a Microshaft product: Doing the same thing several times while expecting a different result is tantamount to mental incompetence, or indicative of one's being a lawyer.

Just install Win 7 and forget about Vista. It can be done with an upgrade disc. People who have XP qualify for an upgrade but they have to do a clean install to do it. Here's MS's instructions on how to do it with XP. Should be no different with Vista. A clean install is a clean install regardless of the OS you had before. You can probably skip some of the steps. You'll have to be the judge.
