I have my computer set up so that my profiles are on a separate partition from the Mozilla programs themselves (Firefox and Thunderbird) - don't know if that's complicating this for me. I didn't have any trouble setting it up this way when I upgraded 1.0.7, though (following Christer's steps in his sticky, "Moving Windows XP default folders Rev1 ") - I was able to get my profile from 1.0.5 to work fine in 1.0.7.
Today I made a backup of my TB 1.0.7 profile, then uninstalled that version of TB, and subsequently installed 1.5.
When I open TB 1.5, though, none of my old stuff is there (folders, address book). When I click Start > Run > thunderbird.exe -profilemanager > OK, the profile manager opens up, and there are two profiles: default (on C: drive), and Rebecca (on D: drive). Rebecca is highlighted; "don't ask at startup" is checked; but when I click on "Start Thunderbird ", there's still nothing there from my old profile.
When I go to D: and look in my profile folder, everything appears to be in order (as it was in 1.0.7).
Any idea what my problem might be?
    Thanks!

I don't recall if the never ask at startup ever worked for me. But the same by-pass trick for NS and Moz work for me. My Target for TB1.0.7 is: "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird\thunderbird.exe" -p TB1.0.7 and that 1.5 is: "C:\Thunderbird 1.5\thunderbird.exe" -p TB1.5
As you can see, although I use the same partition, I use different folder, and profiles. And, each mail client opens correctly.

Thanks for the suggestion, Westside -
The bypass trick didn't work for me, but I'm guessing it has something to do with the fact that while thunderbird.exe is on C:, my profile is on D:
I think I'll uninstall 1.5 and try reinstalling 1.0.7 and see what happens with my profile then...

    Rebecca,
you should not concentrate on the program, but rather on the profile.
If you don't have any profile on the C drive you will have problems, but you do have a profile on the C drive. It should not matter that the profile is on another drive, as long as it is there, and it can be in any folder you want, as long as that path is chosen.
Was your 1.0.7 installed also on the D drive? I am having problems understanding this.

Reinstalled TB 1.0.7, and all is well with my profile again (address book and all folders reappeared as they were originally).
There is a default profile on C:, but I've never used it. I followed Christer's steps to create another profile on D:, and that's the one I've always used.
Are you saying that the shortcut target should be my profile folder, not the location of thunderbird.exe itself?

If I understand you correctly, you have Thunderbird at two revisions. TB does not work with the same sign on name in two places at once. It also does not install very pretty when you use the same name on two different sign in names wioth Windows XP. I have twenty-two users of Thunderbird and the program is stubborn on a lot of issues - especially the same name used more than once.

I find that the easiest thing to do is to check the setup and if I amn stuck after that, then to reinstall TB. You will find qwirks on this software that will also disappear after a few weeks of use as if it learns to work correctly.

    Good luck,
    Ed

The shortcut is on the Desktop, and it uses thunderbird.exe, but it also points to the profile. this is what I had in my first reply. The simplest is to uninstall 1.0.7, and have 1.5 use the same profile. As Edward pointed out it is not only a case of two versions being used at once, but also rewriting the preferences. But, since I never trusted new versions, and always installed another one at another location, I also created new profiles.
From what you described in your original post, it seems that you did things ok. By the way, if you have done what you said: "Start > Run > ...thunderbird.exe -profilemanager ", (-p is good enough) you will only get the Profile manager, but if you had used: "Start > Run > thunderbird.exe -p Rebecca ", assuming that Rebecca is the desired profile, you should have opened. This exactly what I said in my reply to your original post. The only reason why I modify the Target line of the shortcut is because I want to make sure that the next time I use that shortcut, it will open like I want it.
There may be some misunderstanding between the two versions, because I have kept 1.0.7 as default, while 1.5 is not. I have had no problem with this.
