    Hi all

I am trying to restore Windows XP to its factory install.

I insert the XP disc and boot the machine. I get the 'Press any key to boot from disc..' message, however when I press any key, it continues to the Splash screen and it boots normally.

I cannot get to the XP New installation screen....

In the past, I have done this numerous times without any problems...

Any ideas or other information required??

    Kind regards

    Gray

May be due to a cruddy or damaged disc, or possibly a dirty lens or flaky/failing drive.

I'd clean the disc first and try it again. If it still fails, try it in another machine. If it works fine there then you know that the problem lies with the drive in the first machine. Clean the drive in the first machine, (lens cleaner), and try it again.

Let us know what you find ...

    Hi,

    Many thanks for the reply....

I have cleaned the disc - problem persists
I have tried booting from another CD drive in the same machine - problem persists.

I dont get the feeling the problem is with the disc or drives.

Is it possible that the key stroke to 'continue' is not being recognised? The keystrokes to get into the BIOS and Boot menu are recognised fine....?

    Thanks again for your help....

    Kind Regards

Problem solved - plugged in a PS2 keyboard. Seems my usb keyboard was not.being recognised during boot.

Not sure why this hasn't happened in the past...??

    Thanks though.

Check in your BIOS settings (you will probably need to use the PS/2 for this)for Legacy USB and set it to enabled.

I've seen this numerous times (usually on older systems) and was just about to suggest you try a PS/2 keyboard when you posted your solution.

Either way keep that keyboard in reserve even of you don't plan to use it day to day you may need it again in the future.
