Let me start by saying I am not too good at fixing computers, only breaking them :p

I am having major problems with my computer running Windows ME . All I want to do at this point if I can is Re-install ME. The problem is, (and there are many) my computer will not start in normal mode, but only in safe mode, so it will not read my cd-rom drive. Let me give some background and maybe someone will have an idea on what to do. About 18 months ago I purchased the 2002 version of Norton Systemworks. I installed it and ran the virus scan. Well I apparently had a virus and a trojan and I quarantined them, but I think by quarantining it, I set it off as ever since then, I could not use the start button. Everytime I click on the start button, I would get an error message, usually Explorer has caused an error in SHELL32.DLL Explorer will now close. So I was able to live without using the start button, but I couldn't use the run button (unless someone knows another way around it to get the RUN box up) This would be a big help I think if I could get the RUN box to come up.

Anyways, I took it to someone who was supposed to know what they were doing and they made it unusable. Now the computer only starts in safe mode. If I try to start it in normal mode it never finishes loading. If I disable everything, I am able to get it to start in normal mode but it will not read my cd-rom drive so I can't re-install windows. Also, System Restore does not work so that is not an option. If it was, I would've used it long ago, but I think one of the viruses may have messed it up to where it will not restore to a previous date even though it is running.

If there are any more questions or anybody has any idea at all, please help. I have deleted all my files that I didn't need so the computer is pretty much empty. I am sure the registry is very messed up and missing files.

Thanks in advance for any help that can be offered.

All I want to do is re-install Windows ME

You should probably go for a complete fdisk, format and clean install. Lots to check out here. Might want to print out what applies to your system. You will need a bootdisk. If you don't have one, made before your virus problems, recommend you get one here. Save it to the desktop then double click and extract it to a blank floppy.
