Getting pretty good at the re-installs. Its the customizing thats a pain!
Anyway, Sandra still says my HD isn't working up to optimal.

I have a Gateway P4, 3.0 GHz with HT and 1024 megmem and heres
    the problem(?)

    (Copied from a previous post)
    FROM SANDRA:
    Transfer Modes Support:
    Maximum block transfer = 16
    Transfer width = 16 bit
    Max PIO Mode = PIO-4
Max DMA MW Mode = MWDMA-2
    Max UDMA Mode = UDMA-6

    Transfer Modes Active:
    Current block transfer = 16
    Current Active Mode = UDMA-5

And SANDRA gives a warning that: Current mode not optimal, check settings.

How do i check (change?) settings? Any takers?

I think this will be more of a hardware issue and I'm moving it from XP to hardware.

Download and run Everest for a second opinion - Storage > ATA

Would be helpful if you posted the make/model no. of the mobo and HD here - details from Everest, probably from Sandra too.

Your EIDE controller may not support UDMA 6

Pete - right on the money. At least right church, perhaps wrong pew (but I think you nailed it with not supported). However, if his MB does support UDMA 6 , then he's got a HDD that doesn't - perhaps a WD? If so, do we have a glitch in SiSoft or is the drive mfg a little less than honest. hehehe .........

OK, Guys, here it is. NEWT, Sorry for the wrong catagory (but not sure if
    it Hardware or software).

Pete, A nice little program, that Everest. Works great.

Heres the info you wanted to look at. Both HD and MB info from Everest.
From what i can tell, my sys "should" be capable of up-to 150mb but as i
    see sandra reports only 85mb.....

Pete was slam on - Page 31 of your manual references "theoretical" SATA speeds of 150mbs but is hazy re: actual. Your regular IDE headers are limited to 100 which is a notch below state of the art and I think it might be safe to assume that your serial ATA ports may also be a notch below state of the art. Trust me, you as a user are not going to notice any difference what so ever and thus your question can be moved into the realm of intellectual curiosity. Of more importance to your performance equation, may be your hard drive seek speed.

    ;)

    Rockster2u,

Which manual are you referring to? My manual (from GW) page 31 is a
    chapter heading page.

I posted this because i did notice a drop in speed (effeciency) after the re-install. It is quite apparent (to me) that something is "not as it was ", so to speak.

I really dont expect to get 150mb p/s (would be nice tho, wouldn't it). but a 85mb is definately slower than what i was getting. Altho the reason is beyond me (so far). I do expect a $2200.00 machine to run at it best
    however.

I need to apply some updates but not until i get a copy of Acronis Disk Image up and running. Dont want to have to do another re-install. :)

Hopefully, the updates will help the Serial ATA but the only way (i know of) to change the seek timing is to get a faster HD......

    thanks for your input,
    savagcl

    Maggie,
I had them D/L'ed and install on the first re-install of XP. Didn't see
    any difference at all.

Wouldn't hurt to do it again (after i get a good image of my HD saved.

    thanks,

Just make sure the chipset drivers are installed first.

As to the manual, just followed the link right out of your post to Intel and went to your mb manual - maybe 3 clicks away.

Thanks for the help, guys (and Maggie too).
Unfortunately, i'm installing from some cd's that came with the system
(not a true xp cd from MS). The whole process of installing from these
CD's is completely automated. I just replace the cd when it tells me to.
So i have to assume (i really hate that word "assume ") that all is installed
correctly. Thats why i initially thought there was something that they did
during the factory setup that maybe wasn't included on the cd's.

I'll look for the users guide.

Little different story then ........ but you should still check Intel (MoBo Mfg) for updated drivers that may have been released after your image discs were produced. Now, if you don't run at least as good as you did when it was brand spanking new, then you'll have to come back for more.

Yes, i can do that for sure.

Just got the acronis disk image software so should be able to get that
    working shortly.
Then its time to start updating. Will keep this thread updated on
progress and once again, thanks for all the help.

Stay tuned - Chapter 2 starts soon.

Not sure I followed the Acronis comment - Gateway uses Drive Image, thats the image I was referencing but regardless, good luck. Listen to Maggie ....

Yes, some good info there and just enough of a threat (caution, your HD may become unaccessable). to scare me off.

The seagate tools did nothing except tell me my HD is ok but it did confirm
    the 83mb speed.

The more i dig into this, the more i'm convinced that i need to get a local
expert in to look at it and see what can be done (if anything).

This is definately not a problem for a novice. Everything i look at, i just get
more confused. Think i need to back off and give my brain a rest.
But, hey, at least it does work. :)

Thanks for all the assistance. And if anything happens, i'll be sure to post
    it here.

    Again, thanks,

OK then a couple of other questions - are you running SMART drive monitoring? If yes, turn it off. Can you or have you set that drive for DMA.

I noticed on a Seagate page that their bigger SATA's are advertised to run at either 100 or 150mbs transfer rates - how they are to be set - beats me.

Go to PCPitstop and run a profile - post your score if you are brave and check out what they rate your drive speed to be.

    ;)

I think "SMART" is turned on. I dont know how to turn it off.
I can do the pcpitstop thing. I'm already registered there. Will post
