    I am going to re-install W98 over W98.

Question: Do I have to disable anything such as my firewall, anti virus , spybot etc?

To be on the safe side disable the antivirus, but remember to re-enable once you're done.

You may also want to disable any boot antivirus in the BIOS before you begin.

Best to stop all running programs, otherwise any Windows files shared by them may not be updated or fixed in the reinstall...
Why the reinstall, you have problems???

Yes I am. When I go to start/shut down / restart, My computer will not restart. I have tried everything. Restore, SFC. Nothing helped, still wont work.

How do I stop "all" running programs?

Hit CTRL+ALT+DEL and end task on all programs, except Explorer and Systray.
Go to Start, Run, and type in: msconfig
Go over to the startup tab, and take the tick marks out of everything. They won't be uninstalled, just disabled, and you can re-enable them later.
Restart, reinstall Windows, then re-enable the stuff in msconfig.

I think the better way to reinstall would be to boot to the Startup disk and reinstall from DOS. just making sure that Windows goes back into the existing folder.

It will do a pretty much clean install but still preserve your setting etc.

BTW. If you are referring to 98 FE ( not SE ) and you have added the SP1 you will need to reinstall that also.

Window Updates will need to be chekeck into also. ASAP after the reinstall.

I go to start/shut down / restart, My computer will not restart. I have tried everything.

This dictates a floppy boot and reinstall. Just find out where the Windows 98 setup files are before booting to the floppy.

Will this work to fix the problem I'm having with restart rather than using the W98SE disk

C:Windows\Options\cabs\setup.exe , Then press Enter on your Keyboard.

Ignore this post as it is too complicated for me to do this.

    Sorry I couldn't delete it

If the Options are on the folder that you show you can still boot from the floppy and run setup from the Options folder on the HD.

Easiest thing of all to do - Stick the W98 CD in the drive, turn the PC off, and restart it. When reboting, select "Boot from CD" (it will give you the choice automatically), then "Run setup from CD ". If it does not give you this option, then you need to enter the setup of your PC and tell it to boot from CD first. Unfortunately, this difers from manufacturer to maunfacturer, but if you have a generic PC (not a brand name such as Compaq, Acer, Dell, etc.) then it will be in the second option in the setup.
Scroll down to something that says something about boot prefeerence, then just keep pressing the sideways arrow or the plus sign, until CD-ROM is listed first.
If this sounds a bit too technical, don't worry, it isn't. And if you ever get worried that maybe you did something that you shouldn't have, then just keep hitting escape, and it will ask if you want to quit without saving, and just say yes.

Ladyluck, running setup from the C:\Windows\Options\Cabs folder is the better thing to do in the long run. If you remember being prompted to insert the windows CD when installing something, this will no longer be necessary, windows will just go to that folder and get what it needs. But I have noticed if you install dun14-SE.exe [dial up networking update], it will need to be told where the setup cabs are.
You definitely need to boot from a startup disk first, eliminating anything extra running in this way, with or without CD Rom support. I go without CD Rom support.
