I just bought a brand new toshiba satellite laptop running windows vista. I've had it for about a week now. A few days ago, my screen went black. The power light was still on, but I had a black screen and nothing I did would change anything except for rebooting. It happened again yesterday. And now twice today. I checked the reliability monitor and none of these blackouts even show up on it. This is a brand new laptop, with relatively little on the harddrive, so I'm wondering what the heck is going on?

    Any insight would be appreciated.

Not ducking the question, but as it is so new and clearly under warranty I would leave the supplier to sort it out rather than try yourself, with or without our help :)

That will be my next option, but having worked for tech support before, I'd rather find an alternative source of information first. Tech support can be pretty sketchy and uninformed...

Following up on Pete's comment, take it back and get a new one. Any other course of action would be foolish on your part.

    I agree with the suggestions.

You don't say when it happens, just in case though, investigate the sleep/hibernation modes (one is termed hybrid sleep). Vista has a different power saving system to previous versions. You may also need to read closely in the Toshiba User Guide.

Great point Matt - this machine may be behaving exactly as it's supposed to be. So much for my  "Any other course of action would be foolish on your part." commentary.

    OOOOOOOOOOOOOKAAAAAAAAAAAAAY.....

I just exchanged my original toshiba laptop for a new one. Guess what - Same problem. I'm almost certain its not a sleep/hibernation issue, as nothing I do can restore the laptop, save for rebooting. But just for troubleshooting's sake, I've disabled all sleep and hibernation options to see if it will still happen.

Does this occur when running on battery, mains or both?

Just to check, you have tried pressing the power button once quickly (not holding it down for 4 seconds to shutdown the computer)?

Well, it just happened again, so...there goes the windows vista power management theory.

I'm pretty sure I have, but I'll try it again next time it happens just to be sure.

I've been thinking about getting a mac for a while, and I think all these pc problems might push me to finally turn to the dark side...
