RAM - Random Access Memory, used to store temporary data and hold software instructions ready for execution. Memory/storage is the key point here.

Processor - This actually does the work, it executes the instructions stored in RAM which can result in several different outcomes including storing data to RAM (or more permanent storage eg Hard Drive), affecting the display etc.

A very loose analogy would be the RAM as your blood and the processor being your brain, they are unrelated but both require the other to do the job.

As far as speed is concerned there is two ways to look at this...

    1) The bus speed, how fast can your processor speak to the rest of the system (including ram) and vice versa. The amount of RAM you have isn't affected by this.

    2) How much RAM do you have. eg If you only have 512Mb of RAM but regulary use software which uses 1Gb then modern OS's like Windows will swap HD space for RAM at a cost HD is a lot slower than ram ergo the system will also be a lot slower.
