Last night got a call from a friend. He upgraded his RAM with an additional stick of RAM. When he brought the system up, it hung with a disk error message - couldn't tell me exactly what it was. Then he called me.

I reseated the stick and everything appeared ok. Then we ran the system and everything was ok. Then he wanted to create a drive image to an external HD which has an on/off switch. System didn't recognize it. In DM, the PCI USB Hubs were gone.

Rebooted a few times, no joy. Then I moved the PCI card to another empty slot, this time got the Hubs back. But, bringing up the expernal HD gave us an "unknown device" error in every port - 4 of them.

I came to the conclusion that whatever happened at the initial system startup after installing the RAM did the PCI card in. He ordered a new one.

What do guys think, does that sound right?

    Regards - Charles

Famous Philosopher: If a man says something in the woods and there's no women there; is he still wrong?

It sounds like you're thinking is right on and hopefully, it didn't take the external drive with it if he originally had it connected. On the other hand, if the drive wasn't connected, we still know the PCI/USB card is toast. Now, how this came to pass? Sometimes these things are like women and there is/isn't a logical explanation - thats just the way it is and they reserve the right to change their minds. ................Stuff happens.

Hopefully the external is ok. He says it was switched off. I'll get the HD later and test on my system.
    LOL

And the external HD is indeed ok :)

Big difference in cost for a PCI card and a HD.

So we'll assume he's running with a full compliment of memory, a nice new card and a working external drive without having to ask his wife for a couple of extra bucks. Nice conclusion - what kind of Scotch did he get you?

    ;)
