RAM question

Can someone tell me how I can determine what type of RAM chips I CAN install on a particular computer? It currently has two 72 pin DIMM chips, but I don't know how to tell if they are EDO or FPM and honestly don't know what the difference is between them? The chips are 8x64 and I want to increase the RAM to a minimum of 256. There are only 3 slots available on the motherboard.

Any help offered would be tremendously appreciated.

If this is a self-assembled system, then look up the Mother Board manufacturer.
