I need to add additional memory to my computer. I currently have 512mg RAM installed on a Dell Dimension 8200 400MHZ FSB. I do a lot of editing with different photo software and my computer really drags when I have all these programs open and creating. According to Dell I need RDRIMM. When looking for this I found several types. I know they have to be installed in pairs. But 1 I looked at was just RDRAMM 184pin RIMM Dell Dimension 8100/8200 compatible and the other was the exact same specs except it said ECC. So what is the difference and what should I buy?

    Hello Joyce
    ECC stands for Error-Correcting Code.
It usually will cost more than non ECC memory.
Most OEM machines come with non ECC memory be it RDRAM, DDR or SDRAM.

To be absolutly sure you get the exact memory your computer now has, you should go to Dell and type in your "Service Tag "

    Start Here:

    http://service.dell.com/dell/cl/0,,33732+28,00.html?c=us&l=en&s=gen

Consult your owner's manual to see how much maximum memory your motherboard-chipset supports.

Since you will need to install in pairs since your system memory is RDRAM, I suggest two 256 Meg modules.
That will bring your total system memory to one Gig.

That's how much I use here because of my graphic and CAD work.

According to my service tag I need 512MG RDRAM PC800 400MHZ FSB NON-PARITY Unbuffered (Dell lists the part # as 846044-1 and Mfg # as D-3C964)
Now.......... where in the world do I find this. Dell is way too expensive and I know that I can get a better price elsewhere.
I looked at several sites linked to www.pricewatcher.com but was unable to locate exactly what this said.

Unfortunately, RDRAM has always been rather "salty" on cost.
The two places I trust most for computer hardware are the following:

    http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProdu...e=0&propertycode=&propertycodevalue=4153,2984

    http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductList.jsp?ThirdCategoryCode=011107

It appears the cost will be around $100.00/256Meg module (USD)

I don't know what Dell quoted you for price but I must caution you on using memory NOT from Dell.
Dell will, of course guarantee compatibility but neither of the two suppliers above will do that.

You might luck out and then again you might not.

Also, I DO hope you have two empty memory slots to fill.
Moreover, you will notice some memory carries a lifetime warrantee and some only have a one (1) year warrantee.

Proceed with caution Dear Lady :D
