I'm not really sure where this should go, but I thought this forum might the most appropriate. I current have a Dell XPS 400 that I'm using as a file server for pictures, video, music, etc. The OS is installed on a WD Raptor drive and all of the media is stored on a separate, internal 250GB HDD. My OS drive is fully backed up on a regular basis using Genie Soft's backup manager, so I'm not worried about that drive crashing.

The problem is my storage drive. Currently, I have no redundancy. I was looking to install two 1TB HDD's in RAID 1 and store my files on that drive. I know the XPS 400 supports hardware RAID via the BIOS so that isn't a problem.

The question I have is, can I create a RAID array on a non-bootable volume? I've done it before on the drives that were bootable, but I've never tried it on a volume used just for file storage.

Would it just be a matter of telling the BIOS to use, let's say, SATA 1 & SATA 2 for the RAID array provided the boot volume is SATA 0? It really can't be that easy, can it? :D

    Thanks!

    Sure.

Probably, but that depends on your BIOS (or rather who provides the RAID capability). I have both Nvidia & Silicon Image RAID on my motherboard. Check your motherboard manual.
