Whyohwhy is so much software so badly written? (Don't answer that!) I can't install the latest Quicktime standalone (and same problem with iTunes, when it comes to the Quicktime installation bit) because it insists on trying to uninstall the old version, and it can't find the uninstaller. OK, Add/Remove Programs can't find it either..., though it still shows the program, without anything to click on to remove it.

So I've now used both Karen's Registry Ripper and regedit and to try to find all references to Quicktime and remove them - Keys, Values, etc. And, of course I deleted the old program from Program Files, and removed it from all the Application Data folders I could find it in in Documents and Settings, blah...

But I've obviously missed the obviously obvious, because it still won't install.

So - what have I missed, and how can I easily get rid of it, without spending another half day dangerously going through the registry with regedit?

This seems to be even more intractable than Norton Antivirus - and that was bad enough...

Sorry, I should say I had a similar problem with Acrobat reader, when some update removed the original msi file the next update needed to find in order to implement the new update... That's what I meant when I asked why is so much software so badly written. In that case I got so fed up I ripped out the bloated Acrobat Reader and substituted Foxit. But even now I find references to Acrobat Reader still in my Add/Remove Programs, without the appropriate uninstaller. I'd like to clean that out too, if someone would be kind enough to tell me how I may *simply* do it.

But I would like to use Quicktime itself on this occasion...

    No takers, then?

I must say, I'm curious - would someone out there like to try to update their current version of QuickTime 6 or 7 with the latest supposed security fixed version, and let us all know if they are also getting error '-3'? I just wonder how common a problem this is...

(I know I'm not the only one with the problem as a Google search will testify, but some people do manage to solve it, while, despite going manually through my registry twice, stripping out all references to QuickTime and to Apple, there's still something in there telling the new install to try to find the old, non-existent one... ho hum)

    I'll shut up then...
