I discovered after installing Quicktime 5 that Netscape 4.7x crashed with "invalid page fault in MSVCRT.DLL ". I tried replacing MSVCRT.DLL with the original Win98SE version, hiding other MSVCRT on the HD,
hiding NSREG.DAT and making a new profile, and reinstalling Netscape all without effect.

Finally discovered the problem was 2 files installed by Quicktime,
c\program_files\netscape\communicator\program\plugins\npqtplugin3.dll and npqtplugin4.dll. Renamed those and Netscape starts. The other npqtplugin?.dll are OK.

Anybody know what's up with this or have the same problem?

Thanks in advance for any info.

Hi, and welcome to the Forum! :D

I don't use QuickTime at all, as it always crashed my PC. I believe the last Ver. I tried was 4. As to your MSVCRT.DLL IPF's, you certainly did all the correct fixes, or at least what I would have suggested. I'm not sure if those .DLL files you renamed conflict with your OS, or what is going on, for that matter.

I looked at the QuickTime 5 FAQ page, and also their Discussion site, and saw nothing on this particular error. There was one KB Article that suggested trying the StandAlone version if you were having problems:

    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60765

    Sorry I couldn't be more helpful! :(

I personally don't have any problem with QuickTime 5, I used it with Netscape 4.79, Netscape 6.2.1, and IE6 (a small problem with IE).

Netscape Communicator crashes as usual, but I can say it is not caused by QuickTime.

    (I'm using WinXP, QuickTime 5.0.2)

I'd try doing what the article Ramona links to suggests ... for sure a more current version of DirectX and the standalone version installer of QT in safe mode sounds like a good idea too.

Personally I've never installed "any" plugins along with Netscape... have always done a custom install leaving all those out and then install the plugins I want separately. More work... but I've gotten better results.
