This used to not happen much but lately its happening nearly every time I restart the computer. I've made no changes or had no updates installed to cause this problem. I've run malwarebytes. No problem there.

Anyone come across this problem before?

After reading that article I understand I am referring to the task bar, the icons that are pinned next to the start button. ( I thought that was still called the quick launch tool bar.) Anyway, it's these icons that I am referring to.

When I shut down the computer and start anew I don't have this problem. Only when I restart the computer.

As I understand the terminology - immediately to the RIGHT of the Start button is the Taskbar with Quick Launch Icons showing. (single click to start).
Above the Start button are the Desktop Icons/Shortcuts which usually require a Double Left click to activate. (unless the click has been changed to a single click).
The Bottom Right corner is the Systray where Time and Date and Notifications etc are shown. Are we on the right track?

Yeah, we on the same page. The single click icons next to the start button are the ones I'm having trouble with on restart.

http://lifehacker.com/chromes-add-to-taskbar-is-broken-in-windows-10-heres-1733009407 There are suggestions that Chrome has caused this problem. Did you have Chrome on your Quick Launch? Have you recently installed other software which may be the cause? Recent MS update may also be the cause - uninstall as per > Settings > Update and Security > Update History > Uninstall updates and follow process. Reboot and see if the Quick Launch returns.

I don''t have Chrome installed. I haven't installed any new software so I'll let you know when I uninstall/reinstall updates. But it may take a while. This problem only happens randomly. So uninstalling an update may take a few tries to see if said update is the culprit.

None of the updates seemed to be the cause. But I did notice something with all the restarts that were required. In another post I wanted to know how to turn off the password at startup. (It came in handy here.) Anyway, with all the restarts I did I noticed that the 'password at startup' screen appeared for maybe half a second before startup continued. Possible cause maybe?

SFC gave the message ' Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations. '

It's quite possible that one or more cached icons are corrupted. Icons are cached and stored in memory and that memory may not be cleared on a reboot, but does get cleared on a shutdown-restart. Follow the instructions to rebuild the icon cache:

Step #1 seems to have done the trick. I used the computer a while, restarting several times with the icons showing as they should. I even put the computer to sleep instead of shutting down then restarted after waking up. Thanks retiredlearner.

TonyT - I didn't need to rebuild the icon cache but thanks for the suggestion.

Nice to see we finally nailed it. I'm lucky I haven't experienced any major hiccups yet, but I'll be able to find the answers here. ;)
