I have been reading the pdf manual "Knowing Knoppix -- the Beginner's Guide to the Linux that runs from CD" by Phil Jones.

    http://www.math-linux.com/IMG/pdf/knowing-knoppix_2005-06-08.pdf

There seem to be fewer features in 6.7 than 3.3.

I cannot find an instruction manual for version 6.7.

    1. Is Kmail still among the Knoppix programs?

    2. Is there a search function to look for other programs?

    3. There do not seem to be "settings --> control center" in the Kmenu.

    4. At one point knoppix froze. but the (first) remedy in the pdf manual does not seem to work.

the remedy is supposed to be
    1. press ctrl+alt+Exc on keyboard.
    2. the pointer will change into skull and crossbones.
    3. Point anywhere inside the window you want to get rid of
    4. click left mouse button
    5. the errant program will be killed

    any comments appreciated.

It looks like Knoppix is not an end-user OS, rather one only programmers can use.

I misspoke a bit. Knoppix is complete in itself but so different from Windows that it is not intuitive for me.

To get to the folder I call Desktop on windows I have to go to a folder in Knoppix in the left pane called sda1. then I navigate to documents and settings > my account > desktop.

Desktop (the opening screen for windows) is the home base in Windows but not in Knoppix.

But changing from Knoppix's KDE window to Ice Window Manager is not a job for end users.

If you want to try Linux - why not try Ubuntu 12.4 just released.
Has a Desktop setup with Icons on left of screen, built in Word Processing, Libre.
Don't have worry about Anti-Virus software.
I put Ubuntu 11.0 onto a spare HD to see how it worked. I've been pleased with it and it operates with Mozilla Firefox & Thunderbird. Neil.:D

We discussed this on another thread and I couldn't burn Ubuntu for some reason, but I was able to get Knoppix. I am concerned that I can't seem to find a mail client.

I see icedove is mentioned here:

Your user folder is at /home/username. There may or may not be an icon for it on your desktop. Your desktop is /home/username/desktop.

The Knoppix you have uses LXDE, a lightweight desktop environment. You would be better off with the Gnome desktop or XFCE desktop, they more resembles Windows functionality. (KDE resembles Windows too, but to me it looks like childrens' toys)

Try the Debian Live CD and see what you think. (Ubuntu is now so very bloated)

    Download and burn a DVD:

My XP computer can burn CDs but not DVD's, but my win7 laptop can. So I can burn it on the blu-ray disk drive on the win7 laptop then play it on the XP.

Is this the name of an entire OS or just a window manager?

There is no file with the name "hybrid" in it on this page.

There are six different .iso's on that page: gnome, kde, lxde, rescue, standard and xfce.

Download and burn each one to DVD, then boot with each DVD to see the differences.

    Gnome ISO
    XFCE ISO

    Gnome screenshots (with Gnome)
    XFCE screenshots

    To clarify:

    1. The live cd is an operating system which includes a Desktop Environment AND a Window Manager.

    2. Linux is not an operating system, it is a kernel.

    3. The Linux kernel along with base files and a terminal can make a simple operating system similar to DOS.

    4. One can then add to that the X Window System, which enables a generic graphical operating system.

    5. One can then add a Window Manager, which gives a more robust graphical system, sometimes with its own software for file management, terminal (command prompt), window themes, utilities, etc. The MS Windows Window Manager is explorer. Some Linux Window Managers are Nautilus (Gnome), Thunar (XFCE), Fluxbox (stand alone).

    6. One can then add, if desired but not necessary, a Desktop Environment such as Gnome, XFCE, KDE, LXDE. A Desktop Environment consists of the whole 9 yards, including graphical login screen and all the bloat one requires.

    7. There are what's called Linux distributions. These are a linux kernel and often a Desktop Environment, and are designed & customized for specific target audiences, e.g. home use, business use, developer use, technician use, etc. Many distributions come in a variety of customized versions for home, biz, dev & tech use. Server systems don't need a graphical interface, but some distributions include one, or one can be installed if desired.
