Can anybody help me with restore points. I would like to know the following:-

When exactly does Windows XP create it's own Restore Points?

Does it create one automatically when the PC has been built with Win XP?

Does it create one after all updates or just specific ones?

How do I configure a Winxp PC to automatically create windows xp restore points when I want it to?

    Any help would be...well....helpfull.

    Stuart,

Most of your questions should be answered here ....

Use System Restore to Undo Changes if Problems Occur

How to restore the operating system to a previous state in Windows XP

How to start the System Restore tool at a command prompt in Windows XP

and see here at the bottom of the page - System Restore, and especially this link on timing.

BTW - if you have more than one partition on your drive or more than one hard drive, turn off System Restore on all but the drive/partition on which the OS is installed - there are essentially no System files on the other drives.

 I've tried to use System Restore, the restore points are there, but it won't use any of them. Any ideas as to why?

    Thanks!

    Hi Jay,

Even if you disable and re-enable SR?

Can you be a little explicit about what happens - do you get the standard "could not restore" message?

    Regards - Charles

Charles, I didn't turn off SR. If I do, it will delete all restore points. What good would that do me if I can't get back to where I'm trying to go?

Ok, what good is it doing you now?

You have some sort of corruption if having gone through the exercise of getting rid of half (the oldest) of the RP's and not solving the problem.

Do want to make sure that only the OS partition is being monitored - that is correct right?

    Regards - Charles

    Very good point.
A few weeks ago I needed to do a Restore, but everytime I tried to open up SR, I got an error. In the end I realised the only way out was to reinstall SR. I lost all my restore points, but at least I now have a functioning System Restore.
Sometimes you just have to bite the bullet! :(
