This is quite a general question (well, for now anyway:rolleyes: ) but I have a tower that has Win2000 that more or less took a poop so to say. I couldn't get windows to start at all. Truthfully, I can't remember exactly what happens when you attempt to start it since it was about a year ago that it went. Since then I "borrowed" my friends...it is an EMachine with I think only 159 RAM or something like that...super super slow...although the CPU speed is much higher than my old 2000 tower (350mhz).

Anyway, when the emachine Windows ME failed to start a while ago I found a site to download to "reinstall" ME (since we didn't have the orginal disk).....the same goes for my 2000 machine.

We plan to purchase a new one pretty soon but my kids use this.....sorry for rambling...I will get to the point.....would it be worth it (any faster since the 2000 has 256 ram but the cpu is lower?) to try the reloading of 2000 on that tower??? Just to see if it works??

BUT my main question is can I somehow hook up the 2000 machine to MY laptop to test it out without it affecting anything in my laptop system??? I just hate to disconnect the ME machine (if you saw the computer room...you would understand!!)....I thought there may be a way to do so,,....

Thanks and sorry for being so long.....

    Hello Lisa

Sorry somehow this was not showing up in new posts for me.

    Here goes:

Win2000 could be faster with a slower cpu with more RAM.

But that is a general answer. It depends on the processor model.

A Celeron compared to a full Pentium, the Pentium could be be faster even at a slower speed rating.

Then there is the HD speed, type of BUS and video all effect percievied speed.

So you need to crank it up get us the exact error on boot.

If it says disk error or no boot device then that is a different issue than trying to boot 2K and failing.

If the OS has a problem and you can get a 2K install disk then we can possibly do a overlay/repair install. Or even a clean install.

What you propose about hooking to your working system would require removal of the HD and installation in you other computer could be done but the above would be simpler to try first.

Thanks Mike...it is a Pentium. I will probably wait til the weekend to give it a try unless I get motivated during the day when the kids are at school (and aren't on the computer--the ME one).

The thing is...if it is salvagable (hope I spelled that right;) ) I would hate to throw it out:) :)

    Lisa

I just thought of something...I do have an extra working monitor here...can't I just hook it up to that to test it out??

    Windows 2000

First - it will be interesting to see the comments here but a 350 computer even with lots of ram is pushing it. Windows 98 would probably be in its era.
Secondly I do not know what it is you want to see on the windows me computer .
If you wanted to say use documents you could share the documents folder on a network. Set up a network between the 2 computers via a router or cross over cable.
Seeing you do not seem to have many discs of any type when you upgrade to a new computer you can carry over documents but not programs.
With windows the installation files for programs are not distinct in one place - they are all over the place. To install those programs you will need the program install discs.
To move documents or data ( say excel files , music or photos) there is good news . You can easily copy it over - either by the network, a burnt cd or probably the easiest a usb flash memory stick.
You would just plug it into the usb port of the donor machine copy the files over then insert that same disc into the win me machine and copy it back.
Both machines will install the usb disc as a simple drive.
    Hope this helps.
The simple answer is you can connect the 2 computers via a network.
Secondly even with extra ram you are overtaking your computers for their capabilities.
Best to get a newer faster computer.
