If one wants to RDP into a server that they have access to, does terminal services need to be installed? Also if it is installed, what is this 90 grace period for licensing, can Terminal Services be removed if all thats going to happen is RDP into the machine?

Ok after reading more about this Apparently in windows 2003 server it grandfathers the licencse that comes from XP.

However 2000 doesnt seem to have this as an option.
The server in question is windows 2000 and whenever I try to remote to it I recieve the following error.

    Code:
The remote computer disconnected the session because of an error in the licensing protocol. Please try connecting to the reomte computer again

Looking around all I can see is that it points to the terminal server licensing but none of my other servers have a licencing install done on it, being that all its doing is providing remote desktop, not a true terminal event.

Does anyone have any clue on this one?

Terminal services is now offered in two flavors.

Full fledge Terminal Services for a multi-user environment...and
    RDP

RDP is the administrative 1-2 user TS. You do have to configure this on the server, but there is no charge for remote access when used for remote administrative purposes. ie..I don't think you can load Office on the server and then RDP in to use word or access in a multi-user remote access mode.

The error message you have listed, to me, seems more like a access rights not being setup in TS.

Also, the 90 day grace period for license is for the full product.

Apparently I had the server set in Application mode as opposed to remote admin mode, which is what i wanted and doesn't involve licenses.

After fixing this it works just fine.
