Okay, what have I done? I've got two computers, both using Mozilla Suite 1.7.12, both theoretically set up the same. But on the one at home I notice that on certain websites, question marks appear as "place holders" for spaces around links. On the other system "dots" appear in the places where this one shows the question marks. Because the two systems are not even close, I figure it's easier to ask here than to drive across town to compare settings.

In investigating the Preferences, I notice that the language listed first is English/United States, which would seem right. Below, in Character Encoding I've tried all 3 "Western" settings, but nothing seems to change.

There are other websites where I've noticed it, but as an example, when you look on this page, I'm seeing the ??? on the top line between each link.

    Any suggestions?

    bentley,

I don't see what you see, when I access that page with Moz 1.7.12. Try this and see if it makes a difference:

Click on: View | Character Encoding | More Encodings | West European | Western (ISO 8859-1)

    Does this do anything?

Nope. Checked character encoding in both Preferences and in View and they were both set to ISO-8859-1 already. I reset them both and rebooted, and nothing changed. Any other ideas?

BTW - it's not just that one website, but the others where I've noticed it are membership-restricted ones.

The link you gave produce a good webcam from Gloucester Harbor. The other three show, respectively, a broken link, or no picture (one is all black, the other blue). However I got a good weather link . Typically question marks indicate an unusual font, but neither Ramona nor I seem to have that problem.
I am getting the same results from the Cape Ann Web . The problem is exactly the same with any browser, including IE.

The problem is only with the question marks. The webcams are not working, but that's a well-known phenomenon.

    bentley,

    A couple of thoughts:

Are you using a Theme other than the default? If so, revert back to the default and see if that helps.

If that isn't the problem, then create a new Profile. Don't move anything, just see if a new Profile removes the questions marks.

I'm not using a theme, but I was even thinking of removing Mozilla, downloading it once again, and reinstalling it to restore the defaults. I've done this more times on different machines than I can count, but the most recent install I did seems just fine.

It's strange, but I can't find anything that's different in the Preferences settings, one from the other, but the fonts are definitely not the same. I really am not font-astute, so I can't tell what I've got vs. what the settings would indicate, but I think the defaults are what I want!

    bentley,

Reinstalling the program does nothing, as the problem is in your preferences. That's why I suggested a new Profile.

I made a screen shot of the default Font Preference. See this Screen Shot. Is this identical to your settings?

Well, that's interesting. The only difference is that for "Fantasy ", I have Arial instead of Adolescence. I don't have the option of Adolescence at all. Could that indicate anything??

    bentley,

No, I doubt it makes any difference at all. I'm still running 98SE, and you probably run XP, and no doubt that would cause a difference in fonts.
