My computer was infected by multiple viruses so I reinstalled Windows XP. I noticed that doing so took up a ton of space on my hard disk. Way more than there was before I had to reinstall Windows. Anybody have any ideas about what caused this or what I could do? Thank you!

    Welcome to WindowsBBS :)

How did you reinstall Windows - by booting from the installation CD, formatting the drive and installing a fresh copy? or ....??

How many Windows folders have you on the drive? I am wondering if you made a separate install without formatting.

    hi,

just to add to this, when you reinstalled windows xp, did you delete the old partition it is on? (i was unsure if this is what pete was refering to as formatting)

PeteC, I reinstalled Windows using the Windows XP disc. I only have one Windows folder on my hard disk.

I must repeat my question ....
I want to be clear that you installed by booting from the CD and formatting, etc rather than running setup from within Windows.
Can you put that into perspective? The Windows directory on my desktop is 7.6 Gb - yours?

Which Service Pack were you running before the reinstall and which one now?

I reinstalled Windows by booting from installation CD, formatting the drive, and installing a fresh copy. I was running Windows XP SP 3 and am still running Windows XP SP 3. What do you mean by "Windows directory "?

Again... you still haven't shared the size of your Windows directory nor the total used space on your hard drive.

4.22 Gb is by no means excessive - I suggest you download TreeSize Free and go Scan > C:\ drive and see where the disk capacity is used up - screenshot on my C:\ drive for reference .....

Me too :) Post a screenshot of the TreeSize window if you like - Contributing Members can do this, otherwise post on a photohosting site and post the URL here.
