I've only opened my CPU box once, but I noticed the memory chip thing and the empty slot next to it. I'm thinking I should add some memory because my computer is too slow. Here's the stats:

    Microsoft Windows 98 4.10.2222 A
Upgrade using Full OEM CD /SrcDir=D:\WIN98 /IQ /U:xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
    IE 5 6.0.2600.0000
    Normal mode
    Syntax Computer Inc.
    AuthenticAMD AMD-K6(tm) 3D processor
    56MB RAM
    79% system resources free
Windows-managed swap file on drive C (4348MB free)
    Available space on drive C: 4348MB of 6184MB (FAT32)

What kind of memory do I need?
What's the best (fastest) I can do?
Will I need to do some software tweaking?

I sure would appreciate if you can help walk me through this process.

    Thanks very much

You didn't mention the bus speed or processor speed. This is critical in selecting memory. I will assume it is a 100- or 133-MHz bus.

Get low density RAM, eight or more chips per stick, it will run on about anything. Get PC-133 memory for 100- or 133-MHz bus systems. Only PC-66 will work on a 66-MHz-bus system.

Take a look at your specs again. 56 Megs of RAM is really odd. Maybe 256?

If you have 256, that's plenty. There are a lot of reasons your box may be running slow. Like the usual suspects, Temps, TIF, Spyware, useless stuff in registry. etc. A good cleanup and scandisk and defrag will do wonders.

    Bmoore1129,

56 is probably right, Roadrunner doesn't list a video card in his specs which probably means.....on board video. 8 MB of shared video was pretty common for a while.

    8 MB + 56 MB = 64MB

Since that 8MB is allocated by the board and no the OS, it doesnt' exist to Windows.

I went insane the first time I had a board with built-in video....where'd my freaking RAM go? :)
