I was having trouble installing SP3 for my Windows XP. I tried several times but kept getting the "access denied" message after trying several things. I finally worked up the courage to follow Method 2 on the Microsoft help page: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949377 . The process worked and I discovered why I was getting the access denied message. Apparently the AVG free anti virus program was blocking the change in registry settings. There were some other "custom" settings that I think were also culpable. In any event running the Reset.cmd cleared things up and now my Inspiron 6000 is humming along.

Thanks for sharing your experience and subsequent success :)

It is often wise, and a number of programs will recommend this on the install screen, to shut down the av temporarily while the installation proceeds.
