    Greetings;

    Get ready for a Windows Deep-dive (WinXP SP2)

    I've got an Acronis image of a hard disk, on which was installed WinXP SP2, and some very specialized COTS SW packages that are difficult to re-install & license. Therefore, when we move the OS from hardware to hardware, we do it via disk image. Until now...

    The Image was produced on different hardware than it's being restored to. When I did this 2 years ago, XP at least booted into 640X480, and looked horrible, and Device manager had lots of driver issues. However, one by one, I put the drivers in, and everything was happy.

    We're trying this again, on new Dell hardware, and we don't even get to the GUI-portion of Windows; it reboots when it's still in txt-mode, so to speak. We've tried booting to SafeMode, and trying to run a repair with a WinXP CD, but nothing works this time.

    Question: Are there any tips / tricks for shoe-horning a disk-image made on older HW, onto newer HW? -- Even when the new image fails fully boot? Anything on a file-level that we can do?

    Thanks!

    If a repair install won't work - I don't think anything will.

    Did you use the Dell cd or the original cd when you did the repair?

    Good point -- we need to use the same type of CD for the repair, as was used to build the source-PC... I'll have to find out what type of CD was used for the repair -- I'm going to bat for the sysAdmin who's actually performing the work.

    We found a sysAdmin who managed to work around the HW issues, and I understand they're much further along than before. I "ll post details when I get them.
