"Mozilla only accepts hostnames for manual proxies. If you migrate a Communicator 4 profile, you will need to change the settings manually. Communicator 4 allowed URL's in manual configuration, but Mozilla does not. If you migrate a profile configured this way, you will need to change the URL to a hostname and port number. "
    http://www.mozilla.org/releases/mozilla1.1/#new

I saw that my proxie settings from Communicator migrated to pref.js in 7.0 but I am not sure they are even working. I got the llist from this site: (scroll down to yellow box)
    http://ssmedia.com/Utilities/hosts/
List for No Proxy For/Exception Box List (Optional):

Appears to me that the list will not work in 7.0. Any idea of where to get an updated list for Mozilla? Or, is there a user pref that can block the ads?

Good idea to remove this list from my pref.js in 7.0????

    Thanks for the help. donnacat

    Welcome to the Forum donnacat!

    Hi donnacat:

is there a user pref that can block the ads?

Just had a discussion on that issue HERE.

In essence: install adblocker.xpi . This file returns the UI in Netscape 7,
    Edit | Preferences | Advanced - Scripts & Windows
to deselect or select the "Open
    unrequested windows ".

    HTH,

    Ramona :D

How do I install that file? Win98SE operating system. I did download it and doubleclicked it - -and windows asked me what program I wanted to use to open it. It does not have the txt extension either. I tried to view it in notepad and could not read it.

Are you letting me know that if I can install it -once you tell me how -my proxy configuration will work.

Thanks for the welcome too. donnacat

    Hi donnacat,

    To install the adblocker.xpi file:

    Open Netscape 7.0
    Go to Edit|Preferences|Advanced|Software Installation
Insert a tick beside: Enable Software Installation

    Click on File|Open File
Browse to the adblocker.xpi file on your HD
Highlight the file, then click on "Open "
A Software Installation window will pop up advising that a website is asking permission to install your file.

To ensure the file has been installed:
    Edit|Preferences|Advanced|Scripts & Plugins
    This option should be included:
    "Open unrequested windows "

No, I'm not saying this is the fix for your proxy issue. After reading the Mozilla bug report , I'm not really clear on how to configure the proxy, manually or automatic configuration. I'll have to do more research. Does your ISP require a proxy?

Thank you - -I have it installed. I would never have figured out the process without your help. Would this eliminate any lines in the user.js that you have posted on forum? Would you also leave ticked the Enabled software installation or not after the install?

Do I leave it unchecked as a way to block pop-ups? In fact, as I look at the list do I allow any of these actions??

At this time I have left it unchecked and it looks like everything else should be unchecked except: Create or change cookies, Read cookies, Open a link in new window

Open to advice and suggestions here. What do you have checked? WHY??

Think I opened a can of worms!!
    Looking forward to your reply.

I will just delete the proxy info for now - -It was a way to block ads and was effective - -pages loaded so much faster. No - -It is not required by my ISP - -I am stuck with a dial up connection too. donnacat

PS: You put up the install screens - -It would be great to see screens of your selection on preferences and why they were chosen. Or even what you keep in the users.js - sounds like writing a manual. :)

    Hi Donna,

Would this eliminate any lines in the user.js that you have posted on forum?

It eliminates none, and didn't change the user.js in any way.

Would you also leave ticked the Enabled software installation or not after the install?

Personal preference is to disable that feature. I don't want Netscape to install software on my PC, without permission.

I have nothing enabled in Scripts & Plugins: Allow web pages to:

I used a HOST file with Communicator for a while, but it became almost impossible to keep it current. To use it with Netscape, I used an application found here: http://www.accs-net.com/hosts/eDexter.html
This little program kept Communicator from hanging. I still had problems accessing the Netscape sites, and in frustration I finally abandoned using the Host file. You definitely don't need to use a Proxy with this file.

I used the Host file recommended here: http://www.accs-net.com/hosts/

With Netscape 7, the adblocker.xpi does the job much more efficiently.

It would be great to see screens of your selection on preferences and why they were chosen. Or even what you keep in the users.js - sounds like writing a manual. :)

You are looking at my screens. Those were my options. I have added my user.js to the Custom Install page.

Whew! I think I covered all the bases. Let me know if you have more questions.

Hey there - You did cover it all!!! Sincere thanks for all the effort and the time it took. Will look at the user.js that you posted too.

I went ahead and deleted the migrated proxy info and also followed your advice and unchecked all boxes on script and insalling software.. Did you hear today that SSL on IE is not secure and it is recommended to use another browser??

Bit the bullet and allowed 7.0 to retreive mail. By checking mail in the Appearance box - -that start up page disappeared. Who would have thought that was all it would take.

This has been a real learning experience!!

Again - -a HUGE THANK YOU. donna

    Hi Donna,

Good going girl! I feel very confident using Netscape 7.0 Mail. I want to emphasizing, however, that I am using a single Mail Account.

Did you hear today that SSL on IE is not secure and it is recommended to use another browser??

:rolleyes: Teehee, and another good reason to stick with Netscape. Yesssss! Right on!
    GO NETSCAPE! :D :D :D

Yeah, yeah. Yawn, yawn. We know.

The bug referred to not only affects IE but also the KDE browser (and possibly a few others) too.

What you have to ask yourself is: how often are these supposed vulnerabilities actually exploited ITW? Answer: rarely if ever!

The next question you have to ask yourself: do you give up IE's greater usability, stability and performance because of "vulnerabilities" which are never likely to actually be exploited? Answer: personal choice, I suppose.

Next question: would you be more secure if you were to forsake IE and switch to Nutscrape? Hmmm. Well. Wasn't there a SSL vulnerability discovered in Nutscrape? Yes! The Acros-Suencksen SSL Vulnerability which allowed for the interception of (supposedly) secure data. Ha! How very IE! :D ;)

Oh my, oh my, do I ever know how to push your button! I knew that last line would draw you here like a fly to honey! :p

Yes there was... A (that's singular) security vulnerability in Netscape.

Now, I have in my Mail folder 45 (that's forty five) Microsoft Security Bulletins alerting users to Security Patches and updates, beginning 1/30/02 up to and including 8/28/02. Not my definition of stability and performance. Most of them for Lookout! Express/Internet Exploiter.

You're a mighty opponent, but I take your blatherings with a grain of salt, like you no doubt take mine! ;) :D

    Cheers!

What about the Wiretapping Exploit, Frame-Spoofing Vulnerability, Injection Bug, No-Cache Meta-Tag Bug, Brown Orifice Vulnerability (which sounds revolting and is in itself a good reason to abandon Nutscrape), et al?

Blather? Me? Certainly not, madam! I never blather. Nor have I ever blathered. In fact, I would not know how to blather even if I wished to blather. Which I do not. So there :D

    Hi brett,

    eMail Wiretapping Exploit
    This was in February 2001.

    Injection Bug
    Frame-Spoofing Vulnerability
    No-Cache Meta-Tag Bug
These were fixed in Communicator 4.5. I can't even remember that far back. Actually 4.5 was released in June 1998.

    Brown Orifice Vulnerability
    August 2000

Not quite the same as 45 in 8 months.

    Your Favorite Dedicated Netscaper! :D

Whilst I find your blathering amusing as well Brett, I can no longer risk my security. 'Twas fun whilst it lasted, but I've officially moved over to Netscape. :D Jump on in.....the water (something you seem to be all too familiar with) is FINE!

    I never shop (I have a wife), so wouldn't know ;)

Actually, it's fine and only certain products (such as vulcanized underpants) are of limited availability.
