I currently use AVG anti-virus free edition; spybot; spyware blaster and Ad-Aware SE personal.

As far as protection is concerned, have I got things covered or is there anything else I need (compatible freeware).

    Thanks

oshoshitzu - Welcome to the Board :)

You are fairly well covered on the antivirus and antispyware front providing that you keep these programs updated regularly - this could be improved on - see later, but you make no mention of the other all important item - a firewall.

    Which OS are you running?

If it is Windows XP SP1 the native firewall is turned OFF by default, in SP2 the firewall, much improved, is ON by default.

The SP2 firewall is OK, but can be improved on - that in SP1 is not so good.

If you are running Win 98, Me or W2k there is no built in firewall and a third party firewall is essential. The free version of ZoneAlarm is very effective - for something a little more complex Kerio - this is a trial of the full pay version which defaults to a free version after 30 days. If you are running SP1 - you really should upgrade to SP2 - I would use one of these too.

NB - in XP if you use a third party firewall turn off the Windows firewall.

For further protection against spyware - Microsoft AntiSpyware Beta - constantly monitors your PC, auto updates and autoscans - recommended.

And the final layer in your protection - IE-Spyads

Use Firefox for your browser and Thunderbird for your email client. Both are quickly patched when security issues arise.

I opted for CounterSpy as opposed to MS beta spyware since there was some question of compromise with MS's product and CounterSpy give full technical support. Generally you won't require that support but when you do need it (as I did recently) it is worth its weight in gold.
