I want to completely get rid of internet explorer and msn messenger, but they are not in my uninstall program list, and they have no entry in the start menu. These progs continually slow down my cpu, and I want to rid them for good. Any suggestions?

ryukyo - Welcome to the Board :)

Basically you cannot uninstall Internet Exoplorer as it is integrated into Windows, but if you are really set on this you could try IERadicate - I can't find it on the Web right now (this may do it), but be aware that removing IE will also remove OE. IE will not slow down your PC if it is not being used.

Messenger can be uninstalled following the instructions here

thanks peteC, I'll use that for messenger. But even when I "m not using IE constant popups are all over the place, I only use netscape now because I rarely get a popup with that, and the popups with IE won't let me close them immediately, they just create a sound 'ding' and then flash. I usually have to wait about a minute before each window will let me close it.

I do not understand how you are getting popups when IE is not running - running and minimised, yes, maybe.

Have you run the standard spyware/malware cleaners? Ad-Aware SE and Spybot (Quicklinks in my sig - update before running) plus Microsoft AntiSpyware which is a constantly scanning resident?

IE 6 has it's own popup stopper, I prefer the one incorporated in the Google toolbar.

Edit - IE 6 updated through installation of SP 2 includes a popup stopper
