Happy New Year! I'm not sure if this post belongs here or not, so please forgive me!

I have just installed a new 80meg Western Digital hard drive, 7200rpm. I'm using it as the master and keeping the old drive as the slave (20 meg Quantum Fireball CT2020). It only took me 3 days to get that right. Those jumpers are a pain in the ***! Haha!

I have installed Windows ME and loaded all the updates (which took FOREVER!). I have successfully loaded several other programs, like those for my printer, camera, scanner, media player, etc. Everything was going smoothly until last week when I tried to finish loading several programs and games onto the new drive. The computer locks up and won't finish installing the programs.

    The most frequent error is Vcache(01) + 00000E4D 0E: 0028: C004E459.

Sometimes it's followed by any or all of these messages too:
    0D:1B17:017F6BD7
    0D:0246:017747FB
    0D:0FBE:0177268B
    0D:0283:01778869
    0D:0002:017F391C
    0D:12D0:01772737

I have tried to uninstall Norton, but I even get an error in doing that, so uninstallation is not complete. I've got 448meg RAM. I've removed and reseated those, and everything seems ok there. I've got a Radeon DDR graphics card, and it's never given me any trouble. I have stopped everything from running in the background before trying to reinstall the programs. I still get the error.

Some of the programs I'm stuck on are Windows Office 2000, Nascar Racing 2002, Combat Flight Simulator 2, and Wolfenstein. They will load up to about 40-50% and then freeze up every time. I've even tried to install them onto the old drive, but I still get the error.

This is no fun! I had about a week off during the holidays to play with computer stuff, but this has been a real pain. Help!

    Thanks WelshJim.

    (1) I had already cleaned out temp files. No change.

    (2) I had tried a search but without much luck. A few sites that actually list the error I'm having seem to refer back to bad RAM. So I had the bright idea to run a RAM test.

I found one on the Windows site: http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp. It says it should take about 30 minutes to run. I let it run for over TWO HOURS and it wasn't finished yet. I finally had to stop it, and it tells me it found over 30,000,000 errors but couldn't tell me what module had the errors.

This just keeps getting better. I had no problem whatsoever installing software on the OLD drive.

    Say Whut ?

I haven't had much luck in finding a solution to my problem. I do remember reading Somewhere On A Webpage Far Far Away that perhaps Win ME cannot handle the RAM I have installed. Huh ?! I can go up to 512mb but currently I have 448mb, and it's been there for over a year. Any comments?

Do you have the same problems if you use msconfig to only start the vid card ,,,----maybe two or those
    systray
    the two load power profiles
    scanreg
    stateMgr

    ?

I've just spent the last hour removing and replacing RAM sticks, and by Jove, I think I've got it!

I had 64mb RAM which came with the computer, and I had added 128mb and then later 256mb. So I've been running on 448mb for almost two years. I had three slots available and I was using all of them.

I removed them all and tried them one at a time, and the bottom line is now I'm running on only the original 64mb. I have no idea what happened to the other two sticks, but I believe they are both bad. In fact, one of them is completely fried for sure, or else the slot it goes into is fried. How does that happen??

I will dig up my receipts because they may still be under warranty. But at this point, I don't know if I even want to put more RAM back in. This has NOT been fun trying to figure all this out!!!

Good news: I have finally installed all the game software that I couldn't install in the first place! Yeehaw!

Now if it was only Friday.....

    Thanks for letting us know..
Good to here except that now you only have 64 mb..
It might be worth another try to put only the biggest chip in the first bank,, closest to the mother board,, they call it bank 0 usually
    .
. what I'm getting at is simply repeatedly inserting a chip cleans the contacts

thats about the extent of my knowledge in this area :)
