I have an application that calls for a "Pentium III 700MHz or faster processor or other comparable processor ".

I am looking at buying a Dell computer to run just that application that has a "Intel Celeron D Processor 325 (2.53GHz, 256KB L2 Cache, 533MHz FSB). Would this processor meet the requirements. I have been able to check all the other specs but didn't know how to gauge the processor differences. Thanks.

Generically speaking, the new Dell @ 2.53GHz = 2,530MHz. That's three times + better then the 700MZh requirement.

Thanks for the input Steve. When I talked to Dell, they told me I would have problems with the Celeron processor in my application (a professional tax program) and I should go with nothing less than a P4 processor. He said the Celeron processor is primarily a marketing device. This computer will only be used for the tax program - no internet connection and no other programs. Did I get a straight story from Dell? Any thoughts?

I got a similar story from Dell when I was young and dumb. Ended up spending an extra $100.00 on a better video card. I ended up needing the card....

I do support work for an accounting software. It's a "pig" of a software but would run ok on a 2.53 Celeron. The marketing pitch you heard came from the sales person.

As I mentioned before, the Celeron is three time more powerful than what the software comes says you need.

You can't have toooo muchhhhh power, but I'd save the money and go with the Celeron.

Thanks a lot Steve. I went with the unit with the Celeron processor - I was leaning that way even before your last reply.

I won't get the 2005 tax program for a couple of weeks so it will take a little time to see if all works well. If it does, I will congratulate myself on my research skills and asking the right questions. If not, I will place all blame squarely on you.

Seriously, I will follow up later and let you know how it goes/went.

Well Virginia, as you have already bought a Celron nothing can be done about it but Celron is a brain damaged processor and even a lowly AMD Sempron would beat it in ALL the tests that you can throw at it. My advice - go with AMD. They are currently the best processors and have a great price/perfromance ratio.

    Good luck with your Celron.
