Trying to build Athlon XP1800 machine.
Booted new MOBO & processor speed read 15333
reset BIOS to try & solve another problem and now speed says 766.

What did I do wrong? NO what can I do to get the processor speed back?

The machine willnow NOT boot unless I have a ZIP disk in the Zip250 internal drive. Gives a Disk I/O error: Status=00008001

Any idea how I can get the machine to boot without this error & NOT have a zip disk inserted?

    Mainboard ?

What is the mainboard model/make? Do you have the zip as master drive on primary ide? In the bios, is the bootup sequence set to zipdrive instead of "first boot" C,cdrom,A,zipdrive?

Also in BIOS, you might have reset the listing next processor to 100/100 instead of 133/133. This will mess up your processor speed evry time.

    Hi piltogal8,

The cpu is being reported correctly. Your XP1800 actually runs at 1.53Ghz. The 1800 is a "performance rating" . AMD began using this method of identifing processors with the release of the XP's. Because an Athlon at 1.53Ghz is equivilant to a P4@1.8Ghz.

My guess on the 766 issue is that the fsb has been set in bios to 66Mhz which is one half of the 133Mhz fsb the cpu is built for. 766x2=1533.

MObo is Accubyte PCDDR266 M830 series.

The CPU speed was set to 'reserved' & I changed it to 133/133 & now the startup stops at

Hold the CTRL key down for ...or boot from floppy and a HARD stop

The bootup seq is IDE-0 floopy CDROM & try other boot devices=yes

On Std CMOS page I pressed F3 to get the system to autodetect the devices.

Before these were all set to auto.

Ay least the BIOS now shoes 1533 on boot up...but boot doesn't complete so I've gone backwards.

    Ummm

Hi Pilot, you need to tell us after pressing "F3" what showed as master on ide channel 1? You have something wired wrong for sure. Set the jumper on your hard drive to master. Disconnect the zip drive for now altogether. plug your cdrom into ide channel 2 as master. Now enter bios & set things to auto again, f10 to save, reboot. Please post back the results:)

OK fellas. I spent 1 1/2 hr on the phone with the Accubyte tech support & not that I don't beleive them.....but.....

Quotes R the input from Tech support.

Got the machine running by setting the Standard CMOS page to all auto, as 'this is better & the system will configure the sytem on each boot. "

    Advanced Page:- CDROM/floppy/IDE-0
" allows boot from bootable CD for installing another OpSYS "
Try other boot..... = NO "Takes too long time to look for other devices "

NOW this makes the system boot, but ONLY with the CPU P&P set to 100/100 or 100/133 (mem is 133).

BUT when the CPU is set to 133/133 the boot won't complete.
HangS on the "Press CTRL or...to boot from floppy disk" CTL gives a screen with attributes of the Hardfile in column 1 with msg "Press A to boot form floppy or Press C to boot from hardfile." None of these work & I need to reset.

I was told this means that the disk won't work with a processor running at 133. (With the implication that I need a new hardfile) I find it difficult to believe (but I can be convinced). The HD is a Maxstore 52049U4 7200RPM drive. I've used it for maore than a year with NO Problems, and it WORKS with the processor set at 100. It seems to be used in building current machines.

The solution offered by Accubyte is to send the motherboard to them AT MY EXPENSE, they'll test with their hardfiles & if the mobo doesn't work at 133 then they'll send us a replacement mobo, otherwise the mobo is returned by fedex ground & we have to get a new hardfile or live with the processor set at 100 (rather than 133).

We bought the board 1/19, so we're getting VERY tired of all this.

Sure would like any opinions from the group.

I had this same board only the ECS brand, samo prob as you got's now. I Never could get ddr to work until I put "Arctic Silver" between the little fan and the sis chipset. This is a heat sink compound. Still it would not be very reliable & auto reboot after 4 ta 5 hours, so I took it out and put in PC133 memory, tell ya the truth, works great and never new the diff! Even let me OC the darn thing. Very popular that SIS Chipset is

    Hi Everyone,

OK, here's what I found. The motherboard is a PC Chips and Accubyte is the web retailer. Bought from these folks once .

The tech at Accubyte is blowing smoke up your nether regions. There is no reason a good, properly configured motherboard will not support your hard drive. Harddrives operate on a 33.3Mhz bus and I've had the bus overclocked to 41Mhz and still had a hard drive work.

I would tell you to consult the motherboard manual and make sure that everything on the board is set properly but after visiting the PC Chips web site I can only imagine how much use the manual could be. I never found an "M830" listed on the web site. Did find an M830LR. According to their specs it only supports up to 1.4Ghz cpu. Found another etailer with an M830 but the product specs were incomplete.

Just reread your last post, pilot. Here's a SWAG. If your mobo does only support up to 1.4Ghz cpus, then with the bios set at 100/133 the cpu is running at about 1150Mhz. All is well and the computer will boot to the OS. But with the setting at 133/133 the cpu is at 1533Mhz which is not recognized by bios and causes a freeze during post. If that is the problem, then the fix is to flash the bios. I looked at the PC Chips site and even downloaded the most recent bios (most times the zip file will contain a readme file which explains what the new bios updates, this one did not)

Can you provide the exact model number of the motherboard? Also, can you read the info on the chipset? Manufacturer woudl be SIS, VIA or ALi. The reason for asking for the chipset info is that the PC Chips web site has a download for IDE drivers. You should have a cdrom with the drivers, but you may need an update.

    Sorry to be so long,
    Tin

Well , looks like while I was typing (sometimes a real struggle) Rancher may have an answer.

    Pushed the wrong key.

It's is an 830LR mobo & I did check the PCChips web site & it DOES support max speed processor 1.4Ghz and Tin is right ...if the chip is set to 133 it runs at 1533 ghz..................so DID I GET SOLD A MOBO PROCESSOR COMBO THAT IS INCOMPATIBLE????

If so I'll have their a............

I did download the bios from the PCChip site & unpacked it. getting an *.rom file. As I've never flashed the BIOS beofre & there'e no instructions. How do I install it?

Do I boot hte mahcine with the *.rom file as the only file on the A diskette?

After confirmation that there'e a mismatch I need help on a plan to caal them first or flash the BIOS. If this is a solution why did the Tech not tell me.....maybe He'll flash the BIOS & magicallly fix the problem, at my shipping expense?

Or maybe the board is bad?

Thanks for any opinions on this.

    bummer

prolly bad mainboard. Flashing the bios "MAY" fix the prob, Simple process, but is very risky. You have to ask yourself who else is having this prob? I bet less then 5% & this is an error rate for pcchips. As I stated before the ECS K7S5A board is the same as yours, just diff brand. The forum below is of interest to you & read "Problems with DDR Memory" by Shepardspie

    Hi pilot,
Nerer did find a way to contact PC Chips while at the .com site. Did a little digging around and found this http://www.pcchips.nl/support/support.htm it's a Netherlands website and there is an email address for support. By giving them the exact bios version number they can tell you if the board will support your cpu as is or if it needs the bios flash.

    Keep us informed,
    Tin

p.s. did a little more looking and found this http://www.stud.fernuni-hagen.de/q3998142/ubb/Forum4/HTML/001302.html this forum is dedicated to PC Chips products and this particular thread points to what Rancher has said about memory

Now there's 2 problems that MAY be related. The original of the processor running "˜slow’ and an event in the log showing a disk error.

    W2Kpro 5.00.2195 SP2 all updates installed

    MOBO 830LR PCCHIPS
    SIS chip set 735
    BIOS level 8/27/01 form post
    Comp speed 100/133
IDE controller SIS PCI IDE controller
Location PCI bus 0, dev 2, function 5
    Driver 4/24/01 5.0.2195.2959 MS
    Resources I/O range FF0 "“ FF0F

    Event log at each logon/boot
    Event ID 11
The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk0\DR0.

Memory PC133 512 brand for SIS 735 chipset
    PC133 256 older memory (?)

PCCHIPS web site doesn’t show IDE driver for 830LR
    http://www.pcchips.com.tw/ide.html#win2000

Are these 2 "˜situations’ related, and if I need an updated IDE driver, where might I find one?

I noticed SMART was disabled for the Maxtor drive model 52049U4...I don't think it should be????? Might this contribute to the drive error in the event log?

Boot order Floppy/IDE-0/CDR OK or should it be changed?

Processor running at 1150, as Rancher seemed to say in his post.

I hope I have insluded enough info to maybe get the processor running faster & get rid of the disk error.

    Thnaks again all.

Set boot order to; HD0, cdom, floppy.
enable floppy seek tho if ya want to have startup/rescue disk.

Looking back over these post; ah.....what operating sys are ya on:)

says in the header Rancher W2KPro

and how does that relate to the Event log error (or does it) that I get at each logon/boot?
