I am using Windows 2000pro Japanese version. I also have various programs installed that are english versions (office, AutoCAD, etc.)

I am having problems with the menus and command writing being cut-off when using some English programs because the font is too large. Has anyone ever had this problem? Is there a fix for this and what font works best?

There is a thing you could try. It allows me to easily change the type size in quite a few applications. This assumes you are using Internet Explorer as your browser.

    - Open Internet Explorer
    - Click on Tools then on Internet Options then on the Accessibility tab.
    - Place check marks as shown in the picture below.

After that you will be able to manipulate text display size by holding down the CTRL key and rolling your mouse wheel. It seems to work for me in most applications.

If it has no effect on the ones you want, there are maybe some other tricks to be tried but this is by far the easiest if it works.

Worked for explorer.... Still hasn't solved my problem though...

Thank you for the tip, it has helped clear up explorer really nice, but I am still having the same problem...

The two specific programs I am having trouble with are 3ds max and quicken. These two progams have the font issues that I am describing. On the quicken help it mentioned to change the "system fonts" setting to a different font type...

I have all of the windows display fonts set to Tacoma just like in English windows, also the system is set to "use small fonts "

I have everything displayed in 1280x1024 on a 19" monitor.

This is becoming frustrating beyond belief, because some of the functions I need to operate will not appear on the menu's because they are pushed out of the displayed box.

Sorry the resizing didn't work in those applications. I was really hoping it would.

Have you tried turning off hardware acceleration for the video card? Also, check to make sure you have the latest drivers from the card maker - not the ones Microsoft supplied.

You can make changes to your system font by going into regedt32 and changing the value of FONTS.FON in
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\GRE_Initialize
My settings are shown below. But I have no real idea what effect this will have with a non-English OS version.

    GRE_Initialize - FONTS.FON question

Thank you for your response Newt, I appreciate you working with me on this.

    I have opened up the GRE Initialize folder like you said, but my display is a little bit different than what you have posted. My screen reads as follows;

    DisableRemoteFontBootCache : REG_DWORD : 0
    FIXEDFON.FON : REG_SZ : jvgafix.fon
    FONTS.FON : REG_SZ : jvgasys.fon
    GUIFont.CharSet : REG_DWORD : 0x80
    GUIFont.Facename : REG_SZ : MS UI Gothic
    GUIFont.Height : REG_DWORD : 0x9
    JPN98FixPitch : REG_DWORD : 0x1
    OEMFONT.FON : REG_SZ : vga932.fon

I will have to admit that this is the first time I have opened up ths particular file. When I click on the values it simply brings up another box to type in a new value. My instinct tells me that the GUIFont values are what is holding me up here, because the font "MS UI Gothic" displays a little larger than normal for roman characters.

I guess I am a bit nervous as to what to type in these fields without having any experience adjust these parameters. Can I simply type in the font name that I would like to see appear? I have a feeling that it is not that simple....

Of course, my computer seems to care less about my feelings....

Any guidance on this would be greatly appreciated!

I freely admit to being a little over my depth here. However, the registry is nice in that you can easily back up what you have now and restore it back later if you need to.

Before you change anything, right-click on the GRE Initialize folder and select 'export'. That will create a .reg file wherever you want it and with whatever name you want. To restore exactly what you have now, all you have to do is double-click the reg file and it will put the existing data back in for you.

In general with REG_SZ data types, you just put in the english words for what you want. They will either work if you put in valid ones or be ignored.

So I'd say go for it. If some changes you make mess up other aspects of your display you can easily get back to where you are right now.

From a google search on font MS UI Gothic I did notice that most of the returned articles were in a script I think is Japanese but can't say for sure. The article Here is written for Windows CE but also makes me think that font is used with the Japanese version of Windows.

If all else fails, you could always make a registry section for GRE Initialize that works with the problem apps (sort of a standard setup for the US like the one I posted) and another for normal PC use and switch back and forth. It takes about a half second to run a .reg file so if you had one of each, the conversion wouldn't be much of a problem.
