Hi, I have a HP 6730b laptop running Windows XP Professional and seem to have trouble at some WIFI Cafes logging on to the internet. Often it will take forever of repeated attempts "renewing" the connection which resets the IP address etc. Sometimes this doesn't even work. Other WIFI spots no problem. So what is going on and how do I methodically follow this thru. The wireless ICON will say I am connected to the WIFI spot, it will give a speed such as 72Mbps, signal strength excellent, status connected. All this is telling me is that I have successfully connected to the WIFI spot. So I open the browser (Mozilla Firefox) and it comes up server not found and there is no connection to the internet. So what is failing, can anyone help and steer me in the right direction?

These cafes could have some policy in place restricting number of users or bandwidth policy.

Better to enquire at the cafe itself.

Hi rsinfo, I was the only person in the cafe at the time so I am sure it is not this reason. I need to know what is going on in the log in process so I can sort out where the network is not accessing the internet. It is possibly a setting on my computer that causes the issue if so what settings will affect the internet connection. Recall I can get onto the cafes wifi but not beyond. Sometimes it works by repeatedly renewing on the WIFI icon but often it won't work.

If wifi runs from all other places & not just from one place, I won't go looking in my computer for the cause. The cafe may have wifi but may require some setting before it can be used for internet access.

As I said earlier, better enquire about it at the cafe.
