I have had this problem ever since I installed service pack 2. Whenever I try to use the built in fax utility that came with Windows XP, it dials OK, and seems to try to connect, and sometimes even looks like it is going to send the fax, but then it disconnects saying there was a line error.

    Any suggestions?

    Hi alc,
I'm not trying to be a pain. Just trying to fill a void or offer a possible reason for this posts seemingly slow response to your question particularly when a large number of members have already peeked into your post but have not responded. I don't use the fax service so I can't offer anything on a personal level. Perhaps that is an additional factor on the lack of responses and I am not the only member who falls into this category, "those who'd like to help but can't due to lack of knowledge ". I did check our boards database in the "past post" archives and found that there were at least 89 posts in the xp Forum, alone, using the keyword filter of fax and designating the xp in the forum field. Have you looked these over? search

Sometimes members just get burned out on answering a topic that is seen frequently. Also many may not be using "Windows Fax" but have found a much better user friendly Fax software. This topic may in the archives, I dunno' but it's worth a shot. Anyway, you may wish to do the search as suggested and read the posts at your leisure while waiting for a more personal response. I hope this helped in some small way.

Thanks, goddez1, for your suggestions. Actually, I made a similar post late last year when this first happened. I had actually forgotten I had made the original post until I did a search and found it. I don't use the fax option much - obviously - but I occasionally have to fax documents that are 80+ pages, and it just doesn't work well with a regular fax machine. Too many paper jams. Anyway, I used to use WinFax Pro, but the version I have is not compatible with XP, and, in fact, I just had to uninstall it because it wouldn't work and now has messed up something else. So, that is when I tried the faxing utility in XP again and remembered that I had this problem. I'm sure it has something to do with SP2, but can't pinpoint it and Microsoft support is no help.

I ended up faxing the document on an old Win 98SE machine and it worked fine. It's just very irritating to have an option in a newer OS that won't work.
