I have installed and 'reinstalled' NS 7 and am still having problems. I have two major issues:

    1) I cannot seem to get a clean re-install of NS 7. Even having followed ALL of the instructions listed in: HOME.ATT.NET/~cherokee67/ns7pctopc.html
NS 7 would still remembered that it had been install once before and would not automatically configure from my Communicator 4.79 preferences and Mail the second time. This is important because I have a lot of email files, folders and sub-folders that I do not want to manually transfer.

    2) There is apparently a bug relating to the Inbox. When NS 7 was initially installed, everything (including the Inbox) seemed ok. Once I had moved an old message into the Inbox (reorganizing messages); the inbox became corrupt and started using my ISP address as the sender. If I moved the message to another folder, it ok there. Now even new messages show MY email address as the sender in the Inbox. I have posted on the netscape.netscape7.windows newsgroup and a few others have had the same problem.

    Any suggestions???

    Welcome to the Forum, BobC!

    Hi Bob,
This is the key. If you want Netscape 7 to automatically convert your 4.79 preferences, then you must also remove your existing Netscape 7 Profiles folder, when doing a "Clean" install.

    Delete the entire C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape 7
    AND
    the C:\Windows\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles Folder.
    (Depending on your OS)

    OR

You can simply delete Registry.dat and when Netscape is opened, create a new profile.

Before uninstalling and reinstalling again, have you tried deleting the Inbox.msf file? If not try this first, and see if it might have an effect on your problem. If not, then follow the above.

NOTE: back up both your Communicator and Netscape 7 Profile folders before your new install. Better safe than sorry! ;)

Post back with any further questions.

    Ramona,

    Thanks for your timely reply!

I am running WIN 98 SE (+ several patches)

Before I did the reinstall; as far as I know, I deleted everything listed in HOME.ATT.NET/~cherokee67/ns7cleaninstall.html; which included the Netscape folders, the Registry.dat, etc.
I will try it again in case I missed something, but I was rather methodical about it.

As far as the Inbox issue goes; I did a custom install and installed NS 7 on a separate partition which had just been reformated. Before that, I had tried deleting both the Inbox and Inbox.files to no avail. Actually, at one time I tried deleting all *.msf files.

    Hi Bob,

This is the location for your Netscape 7 Profile:
    C:\Windows\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\profilename\xxxxxxxx.slt

After having read your posts on the Netscape 7 Newsgroup, it looks like you have been given the only workarounds that are known to help with a Profile problem. That email you referred to seems to be the culprit. Have you done a virus scan, and do you use AdAware or a similar program? It wouldn't hurt to scan for both a virus, or spyware.

Keep us posted on your progress!

    Ramona,

You mentioned "That email you referred to seems to be the culprit." .. Just to make sure we are both on the same track; it was not any single or particular email that caused the Inbox problem ... Any email that was brought forward from Communicator seemed to do the same thing.

With regard to your mention of: "AdAware or a similar program? It wouldn't hurt to scan for both a virus, or spyware."

    - I don't even know what "AdAware" is
    - I haven't scanned for viruses lately
    - I have never scanned for spyware.

I used to run McAfee, but it seemed to cause me more problems than viruses. A couple of friends had problems with Norton; so I'm not even sure what to get. Suggestions would be welcomed!

Right now, I am back using Communicator 4.79 and not feeling very enthusiastic about the 'benefits' of NS 7!

I do apprediate your help though!

    Hi Bob,

This is the post to which I referred:

    secnews.netscape.com!not-for-mail
    From: BobC
    Newsgroups: netscape.netscape7.windows
Subject: Re: Messages arriving in my 'Inbox' show my email address as "sender" ??
    Date: Fri, 27 Dec 2002 16:21:01 -0500
Organization: Another Netscape Collabra Server User
    User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Win98; en-US; rv:1.0.2) Gecko/20021120 Netscape/7.01
    X-Accept-Language: en-us, en

    Certainly no fix yet!
I Cleaned out Netscape 7 from my system (including out of my Windows
    Registers).
I then reformatted my drive E: where I had NS 7 installed and installed
Communicator 4.79 on my system (Drive C) since NS 7 is supposed to
recognize it's presence. I made sure everything was working OK with
Communicator ... then reinstalled NS 7 (on a vertually clean system).
The install this time recognized that I had Communicator installed and
'automatically' created my new profiles for NS7.
The ''Inbox still has the same problem! It was ok at first when I gets a new messages off the server; but as soon as I moved an old message into the inbox, that changed the inbox 'forever' ! ... Now the inbox
displays the email address as the sender (e.g. jimsmith@yahoo.com).
Please note that when I move that same message back to another folder,
it appears on in that folder.
The problem is associated with the 'Inbox'.

    ---

I must have misunderstood, as it appeared to me you were talking about just one email which was causing the problem.

You can read about the AdAware software HERE. As to an AntiVirus program, there are quite a few good ones out there. My personal preference is Norton AntiVirus. You might check the Applications Forum for more ideas and recommendations. There are a lot of nasty bugs running around the Internet, and a good AntiVirus program is a must.
