The first few times I used snipping tool to copy a piece or image from a web-site it worked fine ; now it just turns the selected area blue, and after saving the selected snip and viewing it, the blue cast remains. Am I doing something wrong or is it a coincidence that I am now trying to snip something unsnippable ?

Try this. Start/Computer then right click on the "C" drive and left click Properties. Then Tools Tab/Error-checking Check Now box. Next window, make sure that the Automatically fix file system errors is checked. Click Start and follow prompts. When it reboots, don't do anything while it is doing it's thing.
