after having some bootup problems I tried sfc /scannow it asked for my xp disk and continued, it finished and the windows file protection window dissappeared. the problem is that every time I reboot, the window file protextion window appears a want to do the process again, how can I stop this. I only wanted to do this once not every boot up. Thanks for your help,

Exactly, what does the window say?

Do you have SP1 installed and what version of Wsfc_os.dll is in your System32 folder?

    "fix" SFC

Here is commands for system file checker

Run command prompt and type sfc /REVERT to return scan to default settings

/SCANNOW Scans all protected system files immediately.
/SCANONCE Scans all protected system files once at the next boot.
/SCANBOOT Scans all protected system files at every boot.
/REVERT Return scan to default setting.
    /PURGECACHE Purges the file cache.
/CACHESIZE=x Sets the file cache size

    sfc /scannow

I have SP1 installed and the window is "WINDOWS FILE PROTECTION" and the message is "wait while windows verifies that all proteced window files are intact and in their original version ". I lokked for the file Wsfc_os.dll and could not find it, I also looked for it with the seach but with no success. I insert the windows XP cd wait for the process to finish ,the window the dissappears and after a while a restart the computer, as the desktop appears the window appaers again asking me to insert the xp cd. I did this process for 4 times but it seems to be a neverending loop

Try toggling the boot options. Run: sfc /scanonce

Maybe it will scan once on the next boot and then stop after that.

    sfc /scannow

I seems that this command worked well , the window did not pop up again, I didn't realise that sfc /scannow was a loop. thankyou problem seems to be solved, regards,

Great! Sometimes XP doesn't know when to stop doing something.

    Thanks for the followup.

    Just FYI:
/scannow is not supposed to be a loop, /scanboot is supposed to be a loop, and /scanonce is supposed to be once---in a perfect world. ;)

PS. The wsfc_os.dll does not appear to exist on XP. I may have been thinking Win2k. On XP, it is sfc_os.dll, but that is no longer relevant.
