I just uninstalled Classic Shell start menu (not sure if that has anything to do with this), and after installing the anniversary update, I can't find anything. Hit the windows key, and type in the title of a file, and the results page which is different from how it used to be, says nothing is found--when I know there is a file that I have searched for and found, in the past. I checked the Properties of my C drive and saw that Windows did have this set to be indexed. I tried Windows troubleshooter for search problems, but it didn't see anything.

Is there anything else I can do?

I can't find a file. Apps can be located very quickly. But even if I type in teh name of a file, it tells me "No results found for x. "

    Thanks, Evan, that did it.

I do have a new question, however. When I search by hitting the Windows key and then typing, at first all I see is the blue Windows logo and the message that the file isn't found. Then, I go up and click on the documents icon, and it appears. How can I get Windows to assume I want to search for a file, by default, so i don't have to make that extra click?

Did you make sure to add the Documents folder to the list of folders you want indexed in the Search settings? By default Windows 10 will search through your documents folder without you having to click on the documents icon so it should just search through your user folders automatically.

No, my documents are in a separate partition, so I just had Windows search my D partition, instead of the Documents folder. OK I'll go and have it index that folder as well.

I went into the Indexing Options dialog, and even though I clicked on the Modify and Advanced buttons, I didn't see how to tell Windows to search my Documents folder. I did check, and in the Properties window, my Documents folder said that it was set to allow Windows to index the folder and its contents.

How about if I move the target of the Documents folder, to be my D partition. Would that do the trick?

One more thing---if I "move" the target of teh Documents folder to my D partition, that would NOT blast away all the files on that partition, would it? Sorry if this is a dumb question but I thought it better to ask first. :)

Yes that should work. No that won't remove any data. You are telling Windows where you want the documents folder to be stored so in this case its going to your D partition.

OK I moved it. I'll reboot and hopefully Windows will start looking there for my files.

A reboot didn't do it. I still got the Windows logo when I search for a doc, forcing me to click on that documents icon at the top.

Does this mean I have to rebuild the index again?

Yes you will need to rebuild the index since the D partition probably is not indexed so make sure under the location for indexed files in the Search settings that you select your location where your documents folder is stored.

OK, I checked in the Indexing options both the D partition, as well as my user profile inside Windows, that the Documents directory should be indexed. The D partition, in its properties, has the option for file contents to be allowed to be indexed.

This should do it. I'll rebuild the index again.

Interesting. Searching after hitting the windows key still gives me the same problem, until I click on the Documents icon. This, after a second index rebuild. However, when I simply open up WIndows Explorer, and click in the upper right hand corner field, for my D partition, it can find these documents immediately.

So I'm really not sure what is going on, but I think it is something to do with teh start menu function, as opposed to a search or indexing issue. This is really strange. I wish there was some way to get a unified (programs and files) search, like its been with Windows 7 and 10 up till this point.

I wish I had a better solution but unfortunately I am out of ideas. Did you have your documents stored on another drive in Windows 7 and did the search function work as expected?

Don't worry, thanks for hanging in there with me. If nothing else, I have already made a shortcut to using Explorer search field, so I'll just use that if I can figure out how to pin it to my start menu or taskbar.

I've had all my files stored on a separate partition, but the same drive, for years and years, with Win 7 and now for the past few months, with windows 10. I probably have done with this win XP as well.

Yes, windows search would function as expected---a unified search. I'd hit the windows key, and type in a program and it would show me that program (such as "speccy," stuff like that). Or I'd type in "car wax" and it would show me that file. I've never had to click on the documents icon to see my file results.

Read that just now, didn't see a mention of search issues.

THis is nothing that would make me roll back the AU (if that solution would even be permanent), just an annoyance. I'll see if someone else has a solution, if not I can live having to make one extra click, as silly as that sounds.

I just decided to reinstall classic shell start menu. My search is now back to normal again.

A shame, because I was just getting used to the default Windows 10 start menu. I think at some point, I will do a repair install, and see if I can get this to work without Classic Shell. But for now, it is working again.
