I have an older back up computer with windows 98se it has a celeron 500 processor and I am selling the computer and I am attempting to reformatt with the restore cd that come with the computer originally. So the HDD is wiped clean, I get through the FDisk fine when I go to format te drive I get the message trying to recover allocation unit and the number keeps running with no end in sight.

Any suggestions on what I can do to get through this and get the computer up and running?

    Drive failing ?

Could be the drive is in trouble.
Go to the manufacturer and download their diagnostics.
Usually the program creates a bootable disk to check your hard drive.
If the drive passes ok on the quick test best to do the full more intensive test.

I think there may have been something wrong in either the MBR or the partition I am not sure. But I found this site http://www.jrwhipple.com/sup_startover.html and he had a WDCLEAR program that wrote over the drive itself with all zeros. Even though it's a fijusu drive the western digital program did the job!. Then I verified the drive with the same program and installed windows 98se from the OEM disc and now everything is working great.Just thought I would put this up just in case anyone else was having the same issues.
