    Hello to all,

I have been using Mozilla 1.7.3 for quite some time with no problems until recently. Web pages are loading slower, I will get error messages that say the browser will be shut down, and the quality feedback agent pops up. Once when it shut down the browser, when I tried to get back into Mozilla, it asked me which profile I wanted to use. I restarted my computer and I was able to get back into Mozilla, but the other problems remain. I have cleared my cache, temp files, and used my spybot and adaware. The only other browser on my computer is IE, which I only use to do security updates. Can anyone give me some suggestions as to what is going on?

    Thanks!

    Jeane

Which operating system? The behavior is very much like the resources leak of Netscape7.1. It should not do that with Mozilla 1.7.3, but one never knows. Do you have a lot of processes on at the startup?

It may be something nasty, running in a background.
You may want to post your "HijackThis" log in "Security" forum.

I have Win 2000. I don't believe I have too many processes loading at startup. One thing I noticed just now, and not sure if related, when I go into Adaware 6.0, a box pops up telling me that the "reference file is not found or corrupted." I downloaded updates just a few days ago. Should I uninstall Adaware 6.0 and install the current version? What should I check next? I really don't know anything about "resource leaks. "

There is a flaw with current Ad-aware update, so, most likely your update didn't go through.
Read THIS THREAD to see how to update it manually.

I have the Personal Edition of AA. Could not tell where to update from your website. Any help with what to do about that or my Mozilla problem?

    Thanks,

Click on "THIS THREAD" link in my previous post, and it'll tell you all you need to know about updating Ad-aware 6.0.
As for Mozilla, I advised you to post your "HijackThis" log in "Security" forum, but update, and run AA, first.

I clicked on the THREAD you mentioned, but was confused as to what to do -- which I know may sound strange to some who are more computer literate. I will send a hijack log, but wanted more info on what a "resource leak" was.

    Anyway, forget about it.

    As for Ad-aware:
    Go HERE.
On the right hand side of the page there is a ref. file 01R 347 26.10.2004 When you download that file, you have to unzip it, and place it in your ad-aware folder on your computer in order for it to work. Then do not update again because there is a bug that lavasoft has to fix.
    This is how you proceed:
Download "01R 347 26.10.2004" file to your computer. Unzip it. It'll become: "reflist.ref" file. Now go to Ad-aware directory, and see, if you have "reflist.ref" file there. If you do, rename it to "reflist.old ", then copy your new "reflist.ref" file, and paste it to Ad-aware directory. If you don't have "reflist.ref" file in Ad-aware directory (it was my case), just copy, and paste a new one.

As for "resource leak ", don't worry about it, since Windows 2000, and above don't have "resource" problem.

    Jeane,

Have you cleared your list of downloaded files in Download Manager recently? When this list is allowed to grow it will slow down your PC. I have the update and experienced no problem. I am running the free AdAware SE Personal Build 1.05. Is this the version you have? If not, then yes, I would upgrade.

If you are concerned about a resource leak, I think you can put that concern to rest, as that was a bug in Netscape 7.1, which affected Win98 users more than Windows 2000 users.

I always update my Adaware definitions directly from the programs. Although, I noticed that the Webupdate goes only 5% , and quits.

Read my posts in this thread. There is a bug in current update, and untli Lavasoft fixes it, manual update is the only way.
I updated it that way, two days ago without a problem.

This Ad-aware update is probably the last one, anyway, since they are phasing it out.
See HERE, and you may want to get SE version, instead.

Ramona has requested that I post this regarding the problem with Ad-Aware updates:

    Ramona,

I just wanted to let you know that I too had problems trying to download the latest updates for Ad-Aware SE Personal free. The d/l scale would only register at 5% and then freeze the system for several seconds before releasing.

I don't know what I did, but after several attempts I was able to get the thing to actually download properly. I now have the SE 1 R17 05.11.2004 update on the system. The only thing that I did before getting the download to work was looking at the "About Ad-Aware SE" icon in the upper right corner and clicking the OK button under that icon. I doubt that this did anything to cause this problem to clear up, but it's the only thing that I did before it did clear.

    Profile in use

    Hi to all,

I thought my problem was solved, but it is happening again. I got rid of the old Adaware and installed the new, and I cleared out my download manager, temp files, etc.

The problem I'm having is, my computer slows down and freezes, when I go off the net and try to get back on, I receive a message that says my profile is already in use, and do I want to rename, delete, or add a new profile. I have to restart my computer to get back into Mozilla.

I have downloaded a couple of themes, more recently the "toybox" theme. Could that have something to do with it? I switched back to "Classic" just in case. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Is any of your other browser opened at that time?

    Jeane,

When you get the message "Your Profile is in use ", do this:
Check the Task Manager to see if mozilla.exe is listed, and if so "End Task "
Look in your *.slt folder for the parent.lock file
    If found, delete the file.

The Theme could be the problem also, but if you have reverted back to Classic then it should clear up.

I'm sure you've done a thorough virus scan and run both AdAware and SpyBot to rule out those possibilities.

I would also remove the Quality Feedback Agent. To do so, delete these files/folder:
    Talkback folder found here:
    C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Talkback
    talkback.cnt file
    talkback.hlp file
    talkback.exe file

    HTH,

    Ramona
