Problems signing onto the internet...

Talk about frustrating! Hopefully someone can help me. I just got home from school and the computer was hooked up to the ethernet there. Now that it's back home and using dial-up, I can't get it to sign online. I connect through AOL and the modem makes the connection and it gets all the way to step 5: Checking the Network and starts over again at step 1. It does the same thing when I try to use Compuserve, as well. I have called AOL and they are clueless. I've tried reinstalling it, the AOL driver, Dial-Up Networking...all of that, but to no avail! It's not the modem, it's something to do with the system. If someone could help me it would REALLY REALLY be great...It's annoying to use this old Pentium computer!!! Thanks in advance for any and all help!
