   I have failed to update to IE11 from, apparently un removable IE8. the only clues are 1: Compatibility says XP SP2 (which was my last m/c!) 2: IE11 claims to be installed but IE8 will nnot go away. I used the updatr mechanism.

   You haven't filled in your system details (please do) but assuming that you're running Windows XP SP2/3, no Microsoft Browser after IE8 can be installed. See Wikipedia and Internet Explorer versions
