I'm trying to move my Netscape 7.05 files from my old Win98 PC to a new Win XP machine. I've successfully transferred the Bookmarks and the Address Book to the new PC, but I can't find a way to read the existing e-mail message files in the new machine. I have copied all the mail files from the old PC (C:\windows\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\...\Mail\) to the new one, but can't find a way to read those files in the newly downloaded copy of Netscape 7.1 on the new XP machine.
Any help would be appreciated. This is driving me crazy.

Welcome to the Forum, EE Paul!

    Hi EE Paul,

When you copied the Mail files to the new PC, were the Windows 98 PC Mail files copied to CD? If so, your problem may be that those file attributes are "Read Only ". Look at the Properties sheet for these files, and if they are "Read Only ", disable by removing the check mark beside that option.

If this isn't the case, then when you copied the Mail files, did you copy only those files WITHOUT the MSF extension?

May I also assume that you had your Mail account set up in Netscape 7.1, before copying those Mail files?

    Let us know,

    Ramona :D

    Ramona,
Thanks very much for your suggestions and the link you provided. You were right-on with your assumptions.

I followed your "Manually Transfer Mail Files ... to Netscape 7.x" writeup, and now I've got my e-mail running on the new computer with Netscape 7.1! I don't think I'd have ever discovered the hidden files feature of WinXP. Nor did I know to only move the files without .mfs extensions.

I would have responded sooner, but I ran into another problem that temporarily side-tracked my efforts to get e-mail running - for some reason, my printer doesn't work when connected to the new machine. I guess it will be returning to the store for some repair of the parallel port.

In any case, I've learned a lot today. This is a terrific resource.

    Thank you.

    EE Paul
